so your argument is they could sell their existing phone then sit around & twiddle their thumbs waiting on the new phone to launch and ship without actually knowing what the new phones were or how much they cost? this is a stretch.
I use to do this, I always have old Android phones around for app dev tinkering and I have a few old iphones from my wife. I'd sell right before preorder and do without a newer phone for two weeks or so.
Now, I'm just lazy and eat the cost of not having to do that.

i have a couple old android phones laying around but i can't imagine moving my sim card back into one of those & struggling along. i pretty much factory reset them after i moved to a new device so i'd have to start over just to move the sim card again when the new phone arrives.
ah, the good old days when I spent every waking minute flashing ROMs.

damn i don't miss that.

No cell phone is worth $1000.

I honestly don't know anyone that gets a brand new $1,000 phone every year? I'm sure some do, but I think that's a fairly small minority.
With phone companies advertising plans like iPhone Forever and Galaxy Forever, I can definitely see it. In this day and age, people want the shiny new toy and will pay for it.

Yea it's an amazing value

i bet you think its ok to pay $60,000 for a new F150 too.
Because that’s totally the same thing as paying a couple hundred more per year to have the latest smartphone.
And you’d lose that bet BTW.

my argument is you can find a phone 95% as good as a new one for 10% of the price and i don't get why anyone would want to pay $1,000 for a few minor tech updates.
There’s nothing wrong with your argument aside from the fact that, for whatever reason, you seem to believe that it should apply universally and if people don’t do what you do, they’re idiots.
Maybe having an optically stabilized lens’s means that much to me. Maybe having a water resistant phone means that much to me. Maybe I want a better quality screen. Maybe staying on iOS means that much to me. Maybe I just want a Samsung device just because that’s my thing.
There a millions of different sets of preferences when it comes to smartphones. I understand this is news for you, but those preferences aren’t always going to match you’re own. Many people are willing and able to pay for what they want. Again, this really isn’t that hard to understand, so I have to believe that you’re not trying to understand and are actually in search of some sort of validation for being thrifty.

Paying $1,000 every year for new phone hardware
Cell Phones have become the most important single piece of tech we own and use the most.
It's probably the most dollar for dollar best purchase we make considering the usage and dependability on it every day of our lives.

i actually got an idea (aka i stole it) on here last week to buy the $200 motog6. my nexus 6p works great still but it's battery is fricked. the moto g6 is about the same with a new battery so worth it. i couldn't justify $1k for the pixel 3xl..i just do not use my phone intensively enough to justify it

When it finally craps out I will get a used pixel 2 for $200-$300.
google said i could get $50 for my nexus 6p
i'm curious what i can get for the moto g6 in a year or 2. i bet the pixel 2 XLs will be $150 max then

The ones I keep around aren't usually that old because I want to dev on current OS, so it isn't bad. They just aren't current generation.
Agreed about root and roming, it gets annoying. It's the only way I can live with Android with non Google phones though.

I'm on my original pixel XL
Nothing I do with my phone is so important that I need to upgrade right now
I think I might upgrade when the pixel 4 comes out

This S9 is my last 1000 dollar phone. I only bought it because they threw a note 8 in free for my wife. It's about 4 months old. If I'm in a position to buy another phone next year I want a oneplus.

How's your battery? Mine is degrading pretty badly. I have to have a charger handy all day now.

I could see it if it was a business deduction. Otherwise I try and stick to phones that are in the $250-$350 range as that seems to provide the best combination of price/performance

I don't pay $1,000, but I've paid say 700 and then sold that same phone 2 years later for at least 550ish.
So it's not like it's some huge loss. I do not upgrade every year, maybe every 2-3 years.
I've only started paying so much for the extra storage, and I protect the investment now with bulky cases.
But typically I just buy used phones for much cheaper for my family and they work fine. I've bought a couple of broken screen iPhone 6's for $20 and then paid $20-$30 to replace the LCD and they work great.

I still have a 5s and it works great for me. I do wish the screen was bigger. When at home, where I do most of my online activities, I use my iPad.
Recently, I have started thinking about an upgrade and have decided on the 7. It seems to have almost all the bells and whistles of the newer models and I can get it for $250 to $350. I can’t see paying $1,000 for a phone that will soon be replaced anyway and Apple is the master of marketing slight upgrades that most won’t use to sell a new phone.

What's funny is that CAD's deal hunting is offset by him buying more electronics than the next 10 people combined.
Are you really that thrifty when the Ebay boxes are piling up with more wifi lightbulbs than any person could ever use?

Amazon delivers to me in hours Cad.
Hours.
And they don't come in dirty boxes using shredded North Korean newspaper for packing protection.
