Well, nobody is doing that so...

You buy a new phone and sell your old one. By doing this, your cost to own is between $200 and $400 per year.

If you buy that same phone and keep it for 5 years, you’re probably selling it for next to nothing and your cost to own is close to $200/year.

Can you honestly not see why someone might want to pay a $100-$200 more per year to always have the latest and greatest?

show me someone selling last year's iphone for $800 so they are only paying $200 for this year's.

The $999 64 GB iPhone X sold for an average of about $722 right before the XS launch.

On average, you’re out $270ish. Again, it’s really that much more than your cost to own for keeping it for years.

"before"

so your argument is they could sell their existing phone then sit around & twiddle their thumbs waiting on the new phone to launch and ship without actually knowing what the new phones were or how much they cost?

this is a stretch.

Dude, you preorder a week and a half before the phone launches. If you sell the phone before you get the new one, you just ship it the day the new one arrives.

This really isn’t that hard to understand. Even if you waited until launch day to post it for sale, you sell it for around $700. That’s $300/year cost to own the phone for a year. Versus $200ish to own the same phone throughout it’s useful life. Why do you think that’s so outrageous?

Unless it's 0% interest, you'll end up paying even more.

The average person isn't using Swappa, eBay, or craigslist to sell their phones. They're going to their carrier and getting much less.

This is veering into used vs new car territory

Google was still offering almost $600 for the Pixel 2 right before the 3 launched.

or using binder's cracker-jack cat-reflex timing to get those last few dollas out of the old phone.

NOT HAPPENING. real people actually use their phones on a daily basis and can't afford his silly 'cross ship' nonsense to make the phone appear as the old one is being sold after having removed EVERYTHING peronsal from the old phone, swapped out the sim card and configure their new device.

that's not how it works for 99.999% of the phone using population.

But lots of people do choose to do it this way, and for them, they’re not certainly not coming out of pocket $1000/year to own a new phone. That’s laughable.

Even if you do a carrier trade in, your cost to own a new phone every year is probably going to be half the retail price of the phone. So $500 per year? Versus $200 to keep your phone as long as you can?

Im saying that either choice is valid and one has to be pretty insecure to ridicule one or the other.

does paying $100 for a brand new Pixel XL make me a dumpsterdiver or a genius?

because it feels good to hold onto that extra $900 and i won't cry crocodile tears if i accidently drop it in the swimming pool.

You put in your first post that people are paying $1,000 every year to own a new phone.

Somehow I question the extent to which you understand how people operate.

I paid $115 for my Pixel and would still be using my Nexus 6P I paid $200 for if I hadn't lost it.

I honestly don't know anyone that gets a brand new $1,000 phone every year? I'm sure some do, but I think that's a fairly small minority.

alright, you win. i bet you think its ok to pay $60,000 for a new F150 too. my argument is you can find a phone 95% as good as a new one for 10% of the price and i don't get why anyone would want to pay $1,000 for a few minor tech updates.

a few years ago i'd probably agree with you but phones have plateaued in recent years and i don't see the value proposition in keeping up with the latest and greatest right now. definitely not with those ugly arse notches. that seems like a huge compromise right now i'm not interested in helping to subsidze the tech companies for $1,000 while they figure out how to get rid of it.

every day i discover new features on my pixel and i can't imagine a new phone being much faster.
