What has him triggered is Google has stepped back from offering unlimited free photo storage to "only" 3X as much free storage as Apple offers.

But go ahead and feel superior while only being 1/3rd of the way there.

Imagine being this uninformed.

Right, and for the time being it's still unlimited for their "version" or product line equivalent of the iPhone.

So is it only “high quality” and “original quality”? So essentially no more free storage at all?

not exactly. you still get 15 free gigs, compared to apple which gives you 5.

You just dont get unlimited, unless you own a pixel.

Do y'all know if there's a way to check how much space your Pixel photos actual use. Right now they don't show up on my storage meter because they're part of the free high-quality photos deal. I'd be curious to know how much 4 years worth of photos takes up.

Yeah that’s almost up since I’ve been with Google for 10+ years

I’m on Apple now and have 200GB but I used all three services to back up my photos (Amazon, Google, Apple)

I broke down and paid for 2 TB at around $10/month awhile back. It's not just storage for pictures though, lot of old videos I uploaded into the cloud that pushed me over the top.

It sucks, but it is what it is.

i'm not worried about my photos as much as i am the 4K and 1080p 60fps videos I have! that must be way larger.

Bottomland: you can look up 'google takeout' which you can use to download everything and if you just select 'photos and videos' it should give you an approximate size for everything you have to date.

i've been holding off on doing this for a long time but with google's latest shenanigans i'm started to worry they will change the pricing model on this as well.

My latest email says:

quote:

Your Pixel device will not be impacted by this change. High?-?quality uploads from your Pixel device will continue to be free and unlimited. This exemption only applies to uploads made from your Pixel device, not uploads from other devices or via photos.google.com.

I have a 3xl. I wonder if I upgrade to a 5 if that changes.

I have photos both from my phone (pixel) and my wife's iPhone as well as a variety of uploads from the last 10 years in my Google photos. I'm at 45gigs or so. I assume the 45 gigs excludes the pixel related uploads but includes everything else

For everyone in this thread who said "just buy a pixel and you're fine" Google didn't forget about you.

Google confirms future Pixel phones won't come with unlimited photo storage

No one said that but me, sarcastically.

Hence the "but seriously, that's a bummer".

More fake news from CAD.

I can't imagine being bothered by this. Of course, I need zero photo storage.

I mean it's not like we're all photographers, but once you get used to taking pics of things it starts to add up.

Most people with kids take lots of pics and videos. But personally most of my pics are of just random shite that I need to remember. Before I take something apart or unwire some shite, I take a few pics. Need a model or serial number off something, take a pic. Take some notes with pen and paper, snap a pic of it. Find something around the house that needs fixing, take a pic and email to yourself.

Having a camera at all times is pretty handy. Get used to the double-tap power button to launch the app and volume button to snap a pic and it's almost instant and second nature.

you don't take photos or record HD videos?

You just lose whatever is on your phone when you buy a new one?

Google is creepy as hell but I can type in the name of my dog and every photo he's in for the last 15 years shows up.

I probably have a couple hundred thousand photos at least and 1000s of hours of video backed up to the cloud.

You keeping those analog photos and videotapes safe in a cardboard box?

You keep having these same issues. Unless you host it yourself, your data is always at the mercy of others.
