Would like to get some details on exactly how it works (pricing/channel availability/etc). Also, if I were to purchase, which should I buy. TIA

Tech Board would be a better place to ask. There are years long conversations on “pulling the plug”.

I’ll put it this way, we had a recent gen one that basically bricked and we haven’t missed it due to built in SmartCast in a cheap Vizio tv. They even recently added the appletv app which is the streaming service

If you’re talking about the device, I have a gen 4 in my den, and a Firestick in a bedroom, and I prefer the Firestick. You can get the same streaming apps on either.

The Apple TV remote is awful. Getting it to jump forward or back during playback is like thumb wrestling.

If you’re talking about Apple TV+ (the streaming service), I think there are at least a couple others that are better right now.

I have the Apple TV 4K (hardware) and I love it. I think I must be the only person on Earth that actually likes the Apple TV remote.

One feature I found very useful is the “TV” app - if you search for a show or movie, it will give you all of the available streaming options. So you can easily find out if a movie is available under one of your streaming services or movie channel apps. Of course, the competitors may have similar options now and I think you can do the same thing with the TV iPhone app. I just find it very convenient.

Also, my A/V receiver doesn’t have AirPlay built in, which I prefer for streaming music whenever I have people over. So I use Apple TV for that.

I don’t have any feedback on the subscription service.

I have Apple TV as a streaming device for Netflix, Prime & ESPN
If looking for a streaming device only I can say I like it much better than Chromecast & Roku

If you're going to spend Apple TV 4k money on a streaming device you should get a Nvidia Shield instead. Otherwise, just get a firestick.

This is a bold statement, because Rokus are great. I actually have a 4K Apple TV that I have never opened. Maybe I should try it out.

I don't understand the recommendations for a firestick when Rokus are available.

Don’t spend almost 200 dollars for Apple TV with the worst remote ever designed instead of getting a roku or fire stick that does the same exact thing for 40 dollars

I like it. It is more expensive than its competitors.
I think the interface is thr best of the Big Three, though I could see someone preferring Roku. Amazon is a distant 3rd here.
It is the only one, I believe, that supports Dolby Vision, and I do think the overall picture looks better than the Firetv Cube. Unfortunately, I'm lazy and haven't compared my roku on a comparable tv, but I have a streaming service for my main tv that doesn't offer a roku app, so it's relegated to non-main tv use, and I don't think it's fair to compare the picture coming off between a 46" Sony from 2010 and a 2018 LG OLED.
If the idea of using your iPhone or ipad (specifically) to view your pictures or as a way to more easily browse streaming apps on your handheld device and get it up on the big screen, I think this feature works a bit better/snappier on the appletv.
The remote doesn't really bother me, but I don't use it. I have mine hooked to a Logitech Harmony. The siri dictation that I've used has been fine, but I really haven't used the voice feature on the others.
I don't use any of the smart home integration features on them to compare, but the Amazon firetv is a full-fledged Alexa which may or may not be convenient for you.
In terms of app availability, unfortunately you really need to know what you want specifically to answer the question. If you don't know of a specific one that you need to check for ahead of time that you couldn't live without, then it's probably popular enough to be on all three platforms. I believe the newest HBO app is absent from the Roku, but you should check me on that if that's one that is important to you.

I would probably YouTube search an overview of the three interfaces and see if you like one more than the others. That's probably the most important part

Did you guys even read the OPs posts in this thread? You have people talking about NVIDIA shields and shite, what makes you think he knows anything about that?

Basically he needs a "Explain this to me like I'm five" type response.

OP do you have cable that you're trying to get rid of? If so, what channels are most have? What kinds of TVs do you have? What is your internet connection like?

If you are in the Apple universe you can play your playlists and look at photos you just took with your phone etc. I added something called a pop socket phone holder to the remote and it helps. Overall connects to AirPods and iPad without issue.

Nvidia Shield does as well.

OP gave us nothing to work with, he deserves the answers he gets. Then he can google that shite and educate himself and make a decision. Also, the shield competes directly with the apple TV on features and price, whereas the $30 devices do not. Seems relevant to mention it. Not sure why you thought it was so out there.
