I have been tasked to find a laptop for my wife. She is a lawyer and her old HP envy has crapped the bed. It had an SSD drive, windows 8, and touchscreen. The only thing she like about it was the silent and lit soft touch keyboard and the SSD drive.

I have set some parameters for my search. I wanted 6th gen I7, SSD drive, 16gb ram, and a thunderbolt port.

I can live without the thunderbolt port, but have included it because we already own an LG ultrawide monitor with thunderbolt inputs. All the peripherals are connected to the monitor. Its like an all-in-one dock and monitor.

I've picked the Dell precision 15 5000 series (5510)...$1,999. Link to Dell 5510 (Dell.com)

What do you experts think? Or would you go with another model or brand?

Asus has been making some good stuff lately, you could probably get more for your money with them.

i'm not a big lover of dell, but the precision line is pretty decent.

you might look at lenovo or asus and compare like models in my opinion.

COMPARE SPECS AND FEATURES, NOT MODELS AND BRANDS.

This is the most common mistake made with computer shoppers.

This is exactly what you described.

Better price

All available laptops on Amazon with those specs

Or this one

I've used a Dell Precision for the last 10-12 years at work getting a new generation every 3ish years. With the exception of the Dell M6500 they have been very dependable. Our 6500s were junk and could crap the video card or mobo after ~1.5 years. Plenty of power to run Pro/E and solve small solutions in ANSYS and Flotherm. The power bricks were f'n huge.

Ironic that you are looking into purchasing a dell laptop for your attorney wife, because I just did the same thing for my attorney wife.

I think $2k is far too much to spend and overkill. You can get your desired specs for half the price. Furthermore, there's probably nothing that your wife will use that computer for that requires 16gb ram or an i7. Attorneys use word processing, spreadsheets, calendars and billing software.

I purchased a refurbished xps 13.... gen6 i5, 8gb ram, 128ssd for $650. I was considering getting her an Alienware line with oled screen (i7,256ssd) for $1000 but decided the portability of the xps line and $300 savings was more desirable than the oled screen.

Dell just updated the xps 13 internals with the 7th gen kaby lake chips, so there's a ton of the sky lake models on clearance which is a far better deal.

Also, be sure to purchase via chat with a sales associate as they can offer you an extra 10% off.

Fwiw- my wife's previous laptop was some big old clunky one. At first she was against the small form factor of the xps, but after first use she really enjoyed it.

Pay less. Get her a Mac, and enjoy the great sex.

While a really nice machine, that is way overkill for a lawyer.

That is a mobile workstation for stuff like Autocad.

You should be able to find a Dell Latitude Series with similar specs for less money.

Came to browse as I am looking to update some work laptops, or switch to 2-in-1.

Use SAVE35 in the coupons and it drops that price down to about $1,855.

I've had a Precision M3800 which looks like it was replaced by the 5000 series. It's a great machine, no real complaints.

We've had great service out of the Dell Latitudes, Optiplexes, and Precisions. We have thousands deployed with few issues. Dell's consumer line isn't so hot from the little I've seen though.

I was looking at the XPS line for a home computer to use for internet and Microsoft Office but don't want one as slim as the 13 inch is. I have never owned Dell but reviews seem hit or miss.

Bro a lawyer does not need good with specs. She couldn't use half of that computing power if she tried.

Agreed. I have a big dell precision (not sure exactly what model) and it weighs about 20 pounds. The power supply is also huge and weighs about 5 pounds. It's a big heavy computer. It was tough to find a decent bag that fit it.

It does have plenty of horsepower to handle my design software. I often have autocad, solidworks, and ansys all running at once and it doesn't mind. I would not want to lug that behemoth around if I didn't need the power though. Holy hell is it heavy.

ETA: I just looked it up. Mine is an M6800, the computer weighs 8.2 pounds, the charger weighs 2.2
