First the previous owner had them locked so I couldn't drop the ac below 74 and I was trying to move in and sweating like a damn pig and I couldn't turn the fricking thermostats down.

Ok fine I finally stopped what I was doing and messed around with the stupid thing until I figured out where that setting was buried.

Next after I finally got WiFi enabled I tried to reset them to factory and thought that would end the problems.

Nope apparently some eco shite is turned on and every time I turned the air down and got busy working after I would begin sweating again and found the stupid thing kept fighting me and turning the air back up.

Sunovabitch. I went into it again and tried to turn all the eco crap off and it still messed up. Some kind of built in schedule was still in there that kept overriding my settings.

Ok got that turned off and now when I have the doors open to move stuff in and out both thermostats display a stupid WHITE ugly-as-frick "your computer has crashed" screen because my humidity hits a certain level and that screen never goes away unless I walk over to the damn thing and press OK.

Oh there are apparently some sensors hidden around the house I can't find with low batteries so every time it loses connection I get that stupid white screen again.

And a moron designed the hideous "barely slide your finger" to get the temp to move shite. Give me a big UP and DOWN button I can tap repeatedly, wtf is this "kind of touch the screen and roll your fingertip in a super awkward way" to make it change temp.
Just display the fricking temp in gigantic numbers and give me a giant up and down icon. That's all I fricking want out of my thermostat.

Stupid shite. I miss my simple wifi Honeywells.

Anyone want this crap??

I'd take it if my ecobee lite died. I have none of these issues you have.

Seriously though, what is it with you and tech? Are you cursed that any tech you mess with screws with you?

I agree with this UI complaint but literally everything else in your post is a result of the thermostat being configured to someone else's tastes but not yours. For example, the previous homeowner set up a high humidity alert. You can't really get upset with the thermostat for having a high humidity alert or for changing temperatures at certain times when a human programmed the device to alert on high humidity and to change temperatures at certain times. The whole "edit" button in the photograph you took should clue you in.

Maybe try setting up the thermostat to your liking? Delete the schedule, delete the alerts, clear out the sensors in the settings. Oh, wait... CAD thread, makes total sense now

Your problem is that you're fricking with it while you're all hot and tired and shite. Take a beat, cool off, reset to factory, and then just poke through the settings. I imagine it would take you less than 15m to turn off everything that annoys you. I know that's how it was with my Nest.

Whew, my favorite smart T-stat is safe from the CAD curse.

And at the bitching about a smart device that SOMEONE ELSE CONFIGURED that you haven’t changed yet.

I can’t imagine how the person who bought your old house with what I can’t imagine in oddly configured automation routines from random arse light switches and bulbs scattered throughout that house.

I have two of the Ecobee Lite units and I've never had an issue. Of course I bought them new and configured them myself so I don't have retarded settings from a previous owner. I'd wait until you figure out how they work before you condemn them. I've had homes with several different kinds of smart thermostats including Honeywells and these Ecobee units are better. Trouble free going on 3 years now. I rarely touch them as I mostly use the app on my phone. The sensors you are pissed at are actually the best part of the whole setup. They are optional so you don't have to use them if you don't want but they let you place the wireless sensor where you spend most of your time so the thermostats are doing their job based off of where you are vs down the hall where the temperature is likely different. Change the batteries and they are good to go.

+1 to this. My office is full of tech equipment and gets hot as shite compared to the rest of the house. When I'm working in there the motion detector picks me up and the thermostat compensates for that room. I also have one in the living room near the kitchen which helps during cooking.

Everything y'all have said is all well and good but waiting for my fiber kit to arrive to hook up my internet and servers and learning how to configure all the nuances of a thermostat were at the bottom of my priorities.

I just needed the damn thing to work and it didn't because it was "too smart for me"

As for the prior owner settings you missed the part where i factory reset it and it turned on that eco shite by default as well as a default schedule that can't be deleted and the stupid hidden sensors low battery alerts can't be dismissed from the "windows has crashed" white screen even though I have the app now on my phone and dismissing the notification there does nothing to the units.

I still have to get up and walk over to it and physically dismiss the white "windows has crashed" screen only for it to come back 15 minutes later.

Nice.

Stupid shite is stupid. I've been looking at white screens on the thermostats 75% of the time since I've moved in. That should go away when you dismiss the notification on your phone at least.

Also I just noticed there is an ecobee door sensor. Wtf is that? Some kind of ecobee security system??

That might explain one of the mystery ecobee sensors I can't find.

eta ok i found the sensors in the back of a shelf high up in a closet. any idea what i'm looking at? are these all temp sensors?

so i have at least 4 ecboee thingies
- door sensor(?)
- that square looking one in the pic below
- 2 trapezoid thingies that i'm guessing are temp sensors.

So I thought the whole point of the ecobee was that you could have "remote" thermostats instead of just a single one in a common area.

I'll take it all if you don't want it.

I've seen the shite you've set up on here with far more complexity than a simple Ecobee, it's not "too smart" for you, you're just being impatient and ornery. In the time you took to compose the above posts you could have just gone down the list of options and set them to your liking as well as done a quick Google to see what sensors you have.

Previous owner should have factory reset all devices but then we'd miss the monthly technology pokes CAD in the eye thread.

My SO had never dealt with smart thermostats before moving in with me. She likes it cooler than I do. She is constantly accusing me of raising the temp on both of my Nests. I just laugh.

Why'd you move? Aren't you the guy that had the badass back porch cut into a hillside or something?

yep. the market forced my hand.

just a footnote from this morning; both ecobees refuse to connect to my WiFi even though they have been working for several days. yes i powered off and rebooted the router. nothing. wtf ecobee

i guess i get to factory reset them again and go through the whole stupid process.

i'm selling these things and putting in a couple rock solid Honeywell WiFi thermostats. I'm done. these things have been nothing but a hassle. by contrast once i connected my honeywells they never had so much as a hiccup for 7 years and always were there and working.
