Judging by no discussion of Google's Live Event yesterday (Tuesday), was it a dud?

I realize this board is a very small sample of technology discussion boards, however based upon what I have scrolled through, I did not see one word about Google's new device release party on Tuesday.

Pixel 3.

- Huge notch.
- Big chin.
+ Built-in spam detector for phone calls
+ 2 cameras on the front for better and wider "selfies."

Plus they released their "Hub" to compete with Echo Show (2nd generation) and Pixel Slate. The Slate looks nice. The Hub is less expensive that the Echo Show (2nd generation) but may be limited by its screen size (7 inch vs. 10 inch).

I recently made the switch away from Google. Had a Pixel XL, Google Home and 2 Google Home Minis. Back with Apple, iPhone Xs. Rock solid phone and battery life is incredible. It's software (while not as customizable) just works, plus they have the best text messaging app available, along with FaceTime. It's quick, efficient and very user friendly.

I also just ordered a Amazon Echo Show (2nd generation) that came with a built-in home hub and Wyze camera and Amazon Echo Plus (2nd generation) that came with a . smart bulb and built-in home bug I already have an Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet.

I've often dabbled and switched environments, long believing that Google would prevail. Today, I'm not so sure.

I'm a Google fan. I was disappointed for sure. I would consider it a bust for the phones. Not enough reason to upgrade from a Pixel 2 XL imo.

I find we have more Samsung people here in the Android realm.

Pixel people here seem to buy when they drop in price.

idk. I got all nexus and pixels so far near announcement days. But as the other guy said there really is no advancement. The notch is horrible. No pixel watch. a dock that cost 80 bucks. Google is trying to push the apple style of selling things and i dont think the crowd is just gonna pay premium for this lackluster advancements.

I want to see samsung release a updated version of the Gear S3 watch with android on it rather then Tizen.

I had a Huawei watch and while it was "ok" it simply does not compare to the iWatch 4 that I have. So much easer to use, operate and look at.

I never used a Samsung phone, only because they were (or are) months behind receiving software updates from Google. That was a big detractor for me. With Apple, it's one standard --- good or bad for phones and software updates --- depending upon your perspective.

Everything has been leaked for weeks. There was no reason to watch yesterday.

The camera advancements were cool, and if I needed a new phone i'd probably get the pixel 3 instead of the 3xl due to the notch.

Google Home stuff is cool if you want a screen. I'm already outfitted with google homes and don't really need a screen so that doesn't really appeal to me either.

Definitely not paying $600 for that tablet/computer that runs chromeOS.

I actually consider FaceTime an inferior product since it only works with one operating system.

I’m an iPhone guy and I have to be honest here. I don’t understand the disappointment. Granted, I haven’t really kept up with the rumor mill but it seems like a decent phone. Google Assistant answering the phone sounds dope, the camera is going to be elite (as always) and it gets the the latest version of Android (as always).

It’s iterative, but seems solid. I’m not sure what everyone was expecting.

I was in the same boat. But DUO --- the name alone, just doesn't do it for me. Quality wise, I've read that DUO may be better, but based upon my real world experience, I don't notice any difference.

The majority of my friends and family (more important) all have or will have Apple products, so in our situation, FT is a better solution for us.

I pre-ordered the 3 XL yesterday.

So at risk of sounding like a fan boy I'll address my opinions on some of this.

quote:

- Huge notch.
- Big chin.

To me if this means that we get awesome front facing speakers...then it is worth it. Besides the "chin" isn't incredibly bigger than the chin on my current Galaxy S8+. I've also seen videos that say the notch isn't nearly as bad in person as it presents in pictures. It is a big notch though I'll give you that. However, when I got my wife the iphone X when it came out I thought I was going to hate the notch but it wasn't too bad so we will see. Like I said I'm willing to compromise on for good front facing speakers. I'm a little disappointed that Google didn't use that big space to put in an array to sensors/cameras to do face unlock...like Apple did.

The spam detector as well as the other call automation features that they demoed look awesome. I can't wait for spam detection on calls. It seems like it could basically put spam calls out of business.

The photography tech on this phone is insane. Now we will have to see more real world reviews. But if it improves on the Pixel 2 that already makes it the best phone camera.

It is by the far the biggest fail Google has put out, I've never seen a phone (3XL) get so much bad press and get ripped apart by consumers so much before. Their twitter posts are just littered with a thousand replies all bashing it.

All warranted though, Android users don't want a notch, especially a gigantic deep notch, and then you keep a large chin despite a huge notch.

The phone is just ugly all the way around.

I'll stick with my S9+ until the S10+ redesign early next year with the first ultrasonic biometric sensor and triple lens camera.

Is this supposed to be new?

My Pixel2 already tells me "Suspected Spam Call".

It answers the call for you and tells you what they said, and then you can choose what to do.

Since this is software based, I imagine Apple would probably follow suit?

Apple isn't close enough on the software side to Google to be able to do this anytime soon IMO. Google is way too far ahead in the AI and Machine Learning space.
