How does HP continue to trick people (myself included) into buying their printers?

I've had this OfficeJet Pro 8710 for less than 3 years. In that time I've printed exactly 1,360 pages according to the printer. Care to guess how many sets of cartridges I've been through?
Well the firmware auto-update feature was on by default, and an update soon after I purchased it bricked 3rd party cartridges, so I had to trash the first set. Bought new cartridges with new chips that worked with the update. The printer must have wasted half the ink in those running cleaning cycles or some bullshite. Bought another aftermarket set which worked for a while until the printer decided it didn't like them anymore, complaining of a "cartridge problem" for which the solution suggested by the app was for me to subscribe to HP's ink service.
And in the meantime, it kept chugging on an uncancelable print job, so the motherfricker wouldn't even scan stuff. It just kept saying it was busy.
It took everything I had to not take it out back for some Office Space action. Got one last set of aftermarket cartridges, and after that this thing is going in the trash.
And check out this craziness. I paid $120 for it in 2018. Check out the price history on this thing! It's going for $769!! I can't imagine how pissed I would be if I had paid more than $150 for this thing, much less hundreds more.
Anyway, is there a printer company that doesn't frick you? Brother?

Unless you need color, get a cheap laser printer

I used to work for a printer manufacturer. It's a razor company, the money is in the blades. Everything is setup to run your ink tanks dry as easily as possible.

I’ve only had 2 brother printers over the last 17yrs, and only got a new one for an MFD so i could scan/copy and print color laser. I get the cheap toner packs off amazon. Never had any issues

I just tossed an 8610 that bricked on aftermarket ink. Got an Epson with the tanks. Screw HP.

I broke down and bought a Cannon color laser printer, it is awesome. I think I paid $279 for it, it has two feed trays, a flat bed and stacked document reader. It does two sided printing. I don't miss an inkjet at all.

i ditched inkjets a while back. not worth the headache.
brother makes a real inexpensive black and white laser printer. they also make a slightly more expensive color one too.
canon is also another brand to consider although their oem laser toner is expensive. you can buy the aftermarket but you have to take the chip out of the canon and install in the aftermarket.

You could say the same thing about any other company's inkjet printers. I'm sure HPs laser printers are great, just like every other laser printer
Hell, my Dell laser printer has been a beast for the past 5 years or so

Laser printers are a better value unless you need color. Color laser toner is costly.
If you’re wanting bubblejet color printing the Epson seems like a good idea.

I can only go by Brother’s fax machines. I have one for insurance jobs for windshield business, still unfortunately have to use fax. If you get pissed at HP, you’ll be even more at Brother. Try not being able to receive a fax because the color blue is low, the fax doesn’t even have blue in it. Then when you check the levels, it’s still half full. I’ve tried all the tricks to try and get it to work and nothing does. I bought more black ink last week and received 4 pages of faxes, it’s already saying I cannot receive more because black is empty, son of a bitch is 3/4 full, and absolutely no help from the company

That seems slightly illegal.

Well they did it, and it wasn't the first time. From what I understand, they've faced class action suits over this practice, but I guess the profits outweigh the legal costs.
Edit: Slight correction I guess, the printer didn't actually "brick" the cartridges, it just refused to use them. But given that they are useless for any other purpose, they are essentially bricks.

I used an Epson printer with a CISS attachment for 5 years to print out glossy labels for my hot sauce and bbq sauce company I had going, worked great but needed to print every week or the ink would dry upon the heads, about 3 years in a message popped up that my heads wore out and I needed to have it serviced, found a site that sold codes that bypassed it for $10 and fixed it! kept it till I retired and moved, the neighbor I gave it to may still be using it!

quote:Welp, here we are. Got maybe 20 pages out of that set and now the printer won't boot. It tries to start up, then it flashes a blue screen before going to a black screen that says "Printer Error. Turn the printer off then on". Turn off, then on, and it repeats. Occasionally it will ask for the wifi password, because it forgot it apparently, then it never connects and goes back to the black screen. And oh yeah, every time it tries to boot it first squirt-squirts more ink down the drain. I am confident that HP programs random "cleaning" cycles into the firmware strictly to boost ink revenue. Offer to clean, let me see how it's printing, don't just flush that shite down the drain.
It took everything I had to not take it out back for some Office Space action. Got one last set of aftermarket cartridges, and after that this thing is going in the trash.
So now I'm forced to invest in a camera that can shoot nice slow motion video as I destroy this thing. This will be my first venture into film making, so I want to get off to a good start. I plan to incorporate both melee and ranged weapons, so I will need a nice zoom lens. Any recs for a camera that can handle that without breaking the bank?
Also frick ink jets. And I think frick all-in-one machines, too. I need color, but not photo quality, so I'm going with a color laser. And I know it will be more up front, but I think it will pay off in the long run to get a standalone document scanner. It won't be quite as convenient as a "copy" button, but we can deal with a two step scan->print.
So is there a preferred color laser? How about a document scanner with 20+ page feeder? Would be nice if it can handle receipts, but not necessary.

following this thread with great interest after my 3yo broke the glass on a donated laser printer that was working like a champ until then.
my blood boils every time i have to pay $3 to print a shipping label at UPS to get a 'free return' from amazon since i have no way to make physical copies of anythning.
THANKS AMAZON. what was wrong with the fricking QR code? Felt the need to kill a few trees so you went back to the shitty print labels?

I have an HP laserjet that I hate. I have only kept it around for many years because the toner cartridge it came with lasted well over 5 years, and replacement aftermarket toner was extremely cheap and works perfectly (even though the built-in webserver page complains about it not being a genuine cartridge).
It frequently stalls and needs re-adding and I never can figure out why (it's not dropping off the network, I can pull up its webserver page, but will print for some clients and not others). I think the HP drivers are fixed now but back in the day the HP drivers for mac clients were terrible and would take 5+ minutes to send a single page print job. Replacing with some open source gutenprint driver from CUPS or something ended up working perfectly to resolve that.
I rarely ever need to print documents so that's really the only reason I haven't replaced it, but every time I do I know I'm in for a 10 minute session to figure out why it's not in the mood to print this morning...

quote:Thanks for confirming that even some HP lasers suck. I sometimes use Brother, Dell, and Canon lasers and they all seem to pretty much just keep working without issue. I think I will just pick a simple color laser that does duplex, and also a document scanner. I'll probably be out ~$600, but the piece of shite I have now has cost me at least that much in ink and time.

I've had an HP color laser for almost a decade. It's a beast. I buy generic toner with zero issues.
