is there a trick to it
no it was pretty straight forward using my desktop at the house.

You use the color touch screen like the pad on the apple remote
No. I use the actual up/dn and menu/enter buttons to control the ATV and DTVN operations. I havent messed around to see if you can use the screen to use swipe gestures. Only time I use the screen is to toggle between the receiver or TV to change a setting or something.

I hate the companion remote. Not backlighting the buttons? Get the frick out Harmony.
I have the elite and I use the companion remote like 95% of the time

The best remote they ever made was the Harmony 900. Perfect form factor (without all of the issues you are describing) and includes IR/RF capabilities.
I still have mine and it works great. Will pick up another on eBay or Amazon when this one breaks.

The elite may suck as well. My 650's i have in my bedrooms are superior to my companion in the living room.

Whys that?
I just like physical buttons, and the companion has more of them. Plus the companion works even when my fiancee screws everything up by using one of the other (non-Harmony) remotes. If she uses the uverse remote to turn something on, the companion seems to work but the elite gets all fricked up.
Plus I like the number pad since I can quickly get to the range of channels I want to be in in the guide. I find that faster than using the favorites on the elite remote.

Until you are watching a movie with the lights off.

I haven't really had issues w/ lack of backlighting. We just don't watch all that many movies in the dark. We're usually working while watching TV/movies anyway.
To be honest, I'm not the best Harmony user because I don't have enough components to make it worthwhile. I do like the companion remote, because it's simple to use. I can see why backlighting would make it ideal, though.

I have an old Harmony One remote but haven't used it in 2 years b/c it never worked right w/ all my shite. Does this new one work better?

I have that setup but I also have the added companion remote
TBH, I find myself using the companion remote more than the ultimate. I like having the number keys and it's always charged and ready to go
I have the same setup and feel the same way, but there are 2 problems with the companion remote- 1. Is you can't "fix" a problem and individually control a component, you need either the app or the touch remote to do so and 2. No backlight. It's useless in the dark.
I still 100% recommend getting a companion remote as well, since it's so cheap, and easier to use unless it's dark or u need to do advanced functions

Am I the only one who memorizes a remote fairly quickly?
I don't feel like I need backlight much

My companion and hub do some kind of weird thing where they occasionally don't respond when you push a button. Then about 30s later, it hits every button you pressed simultaneously. I don't know how to fix the issue.

Excellent remote, especially for the price. I've had mine for almost a year and it replaced an $800 Universal that was 12 years old. I'm loving the Harmony on my system.
I have mine controlling a full AV system that's all hidden in a closet with multiple zones of audio. I can also control my thermostat from the remote.
I'm really glad I decided to give the Harmony a try before spending 4x more on another Universal.

What is the companion remote? I have the harmony elite w/hub and miss the number buttons sometimes myself

The 900 will work with newer devices like Fire TV and Kodi, Roku 3, etc?

you can get the companion remote for like $25 on eBay and run it alongside the elite remote. thats the setup I use and I love it.

The lack of dedicated number buttons is a big downside.
Why? I have the Harmony Ultimate model and assume yours has a similar channel "Favorites" screen that you lets you select by channel logo. If I need to go to a channel not in Favorites then I just scroll through the channel guide.
Mine has a virtual number keypad screen, but I've found there is no reason to use it even once a month.
