The fire stick is usually cheaper and can do the job. However the Amazon user interface is just a mess.

Prefer the Roku over the fire stick for that reason alone

For what I use it for Roku does the trick. Only downside I've read it's hard to side load apps to the Roku.

Roku interface is better but not by much. You can side load a Firestick with apps that aren't in the Play Store which opens up a lot of options you can't get on the Roku.

Have you considered a google box? NVIDIA Shield was the goto for a long time and now Walmart has come out called ONN streaming devices. When my Sheilds die, I will replace with those, a buddy has started with them and he likes the remote better, has no complaints about anything when comparing to the Shield.

Personally, I like the Roku. I put them on every TV in the house, even the smart TVs. That way they all work the same way and I don't have to explain why this TV is different from that TV.

I have Roku on all of our TVs and we love it. I used to have Firestick many years ago and I thought it was awful but I am sure it has gotten a lot better since then

my 2 cents is every firestick i've ever purchased becomes slow as molasses after a few months and no, a factory reset doesn't help.

auto-software-updates is the worst thing ever for already underpowered electronics.

planned obsolescence is a scourge.

Roku runs circles around Fire stick. The interface is miles better and Roku is faster and better app

The Amazon prime app and fire stick interface is so busy and they want you to buy and rent stuff too much

Just show my apps and shows

thank you for saying much more succinctly what i was attempting to say

tl;dr a firestick not plugged into usb takes FOREVER to boot up and the apps run like shite.

roku has always been quick, feels lightweight and i don't have a single roku device (and i have one thats about 7 years old) that turned into a brick or i'm waiting so long for an app to launch i pull the plug out and restart it.

by comparison i have a small rubbermaid full of shite-frick firesticks that i yanked out and not sure why i kept them.

firesticks suck and amazon makes it so you have no choice on software updates or they won't let you use it even if it was working fine before and you have ZERO reason to update it.

I used to have fire sticks on every TV but then I got a Roku TV for outdoors and have since switched all my firesticks to Rokus

once upon a time i had a firestick on every device at my house believing a jailbroke android device would be the last thing i ever had to buy to open up a world of viewing entertainment.

then one by one even the 'nice' fire boxes became unusable and i threw a tantrum and got rid of all of them.

Roku has no browser and doesn't allow you to side load apps that you want. No chance to use,any IPTV.

Fire stick and it’s not even close. ROKU has limited applications and with the fire stick, you have a multitude of options including adding additional applications outside the fire stick network. ROKU programming is limited to Pluto programming for the most part but with Firestick, you can add iptv services which has a wide range of global channels. All those that are discarding your firestick is due to lack of knowledge. Firestick hands down for all the reasons stated above and more.
