Dual/Triple Monitors vs. One Ultra Wide Monitor for home office

Starting to explore building my home office for my new fully remote job and I was looking for opinions on this. Which setup is better? Is the single UW Monitor simpler?
My job involves coding, programming, and spreadsheets.
I also have a YouTube channel I run and do some basic video editing but nothing too fancy. I also stream every now and then.
I don't play many PC games but would like to keep that option open.

It really all depends on your use case. I have my 17" laptop setup with a 27" monitor and 32" monitor. I keep my server up on the 32" with video camera feeds, and work in a VDI connection that uses my laptop and 27" as dual screens. So if i want to access personal stuff (email, browser, files) the i just minimize my VDI and hit it. Like previous poster said, most devs/programmers usually like a vertical screen for more lines to read at a time.

I'm the idiot with 4 x 27" monitors on an L shaped desk, mission control style. But I generally have to monitor a lot of things continously.

There are two circumstances in which I think multiple monitors is superior to a single UW (assuming all things equal):
1. You want at least one monitor in vertical orientation.
2. You want to do something that is better in full screen mode, but also want to do other things at the same time (I know that sounded moronic, so i.e. play a full screen game while also having Discord/Netflix/etc running at the same time. I've never understood these people, and think they are kind of insane...)
Other than that, I prefer UW.

I went to one 49" ultrawide and haven't looked back. It's great for blowing up detailed blueprints or having email, a Word doc and a spreadsheet side by side by side.

Multiple monitors because going "full screen" on a giant monitor is a PITA. You have to drag everything to get things where you want it. With multiple monitors you can just go full screen with any app on each and easily work on multiple apps w/out dealing with dragging and lining them up.

I have dual monitors and the laptop screen as the 3rd. I like the distinct screens of each monitor.
Similar to those who listed complaints about “full screen” mode, it can be difficult to share content if your work will be fully remote and involve screen sharing (through MS Teams or similar).
Please don’t share the UW screen, it looks ridiculous at the other end. You’ll have to share windows and deal with changing those if you switch applications.

Dell allows for virtual monitors. Works very well in my experience.

Dell Display Manager. Its why I'm looking at the 43" U4320Q.
For example, like the OP I'm working from home. I try to keep my work computer and personal computer separate. The monitor has multiple inputs where both computers can be used, even sharing the keyboard and mouse.
It's a productivity monitor though, so it may not fit OP's criteria for occasional gaming.

You can use Microsoft Powertoys to set up custom zones to shift+drag windows to.

I'm about to make the plunge too.
I've got dual 32"s and it's almost too much and the older I get I need to blow up prints to see them over even the 32"
