This is my first time with satellite TV , but I wasnt expecting this. I was told that newer satellite equipment shouldn't have problems with rain.

I've had Direct for 14 years now. It has gotten a LOT better. My SD channels never go out now, even in intense thunderstorms, and they used to go out all the time with just regular rain. The HD channels will lose signal in a bad thunderstorm or if there's a lot of lighting around, and in really heavy rain. Regular, steady rain doesn't impact it at all.
I have the new genie box. How do I turn on SD only? Do I just turn off the HD resolutions?

I just signed up 5 days ago and I love it so far. It went out once but it was raining pretty hard and it was for like 5 min. I checked my signal Strength today and I got some 98's 99's and 100's. I think maybe one 97. Should I call and get them to come reconfigue my dish?

Quick Explainer: The wavelength of this satellite band is smaller than a raindrop, so a rainstorm in the dish path will attenuate the signal. Even if its NOT raining, if your dish is looking though a towering thunderhead, you can still get rain fade although its not raining at your dish site. So outages will happen in La, but should not last long.
As others have said, dish alignment is critical. You are aiming at a dumpster-sized bird 25,000 miles away, and have to see it dead-on perfect.

Not sure on a genie box, I don't have one. Go to the settings menu, and there's one where you can configure the guide. There's an option to display all SD and HD channels. Forget which submenu it's under. Display or Remote maybe. It's been a while since I turned it on.

Menu-->display-->something-->unchecked "hide SD duplicates"

It's gotten so bad that my tv goes out when it's overcast before a storm passes through. Have had people come out on two occasions, no good. It's a little better after the second guy but still not where it should be. Last time I called the retention center the man on the phone essentially called me a liar when I told him what was happening. His reasoning was he lives in Tennessee and he has no issues.
Also got screwed out of Sunday ticket. Was supposed to get it free for a year when I signed up. Long story short, the woman who originally signed us up accidentally gave us the Select package when we requested the Choice package. The installers left around 2 that day, I got home around 5 and immediately called and had it changed. Because they have that I originally signed up for the Select package, I am ineligible to get Sunday Ticket free for a year. Best they can do is 44.99 from what I've been told. I've just come to the conclusion that they don't have very good "customer notes" because not only was I promised it free twice (even told them the date the 2nd promise was given) but I also went round and round with them about charging me a moving fee after I moved from BR to Laplace, after I was promised they would waive that fee as well. Took a lot of calls but I finally got a hold of someone who helped me out and got me installed free of charge.
I'm counting down the days until my contract is up.

The past few weeks has been really bad as far as rain fade goes but it doesn't stay out for long so it's manageable. However, twice now in the last few months the boxes just freeze, reset and erase the hard drive. It even deleted what we had scheduled to record. We called them and were told sometimes the boxes need to be reset and I told them it did it in the middle of watching a fricking show and then poof, gone. Their excuse was that we must have hit something which is bullshite. You have to go to a few different menus and confirm it before it will perform a reset. We're actually talking about just buying out the last 10 months of this contract. If this happens in the middle of an LSU game i'll lose my shite.

I thought about buying out the last 14 months, until they told me how much they would charge me to do it.

This all makes me miss the massive dish we had in our backyard in the 80's. Never went out and you could move it around until you found the foreign porn channels.

That's about as good #s as your going to get. I was still getting signal with 20s after the roofers tore of the shingles and dropped them on my dish and bent the arm. With 20s if a bird flew by I would lose signal

Your bracket isn't secure enough to prevent the wind from causing deflection. Make sure it can't move at all. I had mine so damn tight that I gave up trying to remove it when I dropped dish.
This is the correct answer. I had DirecTV once and had problems with passing storms too. The lock onto the satellite has to be solid. I wound up buying the industrial strength install that sports bars use and that largely solved the problem.

Change to standard definition channels during rain

This thread is making me nervous. I have DTV coming out next week to install my dish; switching away from Uverse (cost and outages)

file a complaint with the FCC. They have a form to do it on their website - it's super easy. I did this with Comcast and I got the best service I have ever received from them. I would put in there that you were promised one thing, but given another and that you have been dissatisfied with the quality since the beginning. Blame it on the shitty installers. I imagine DTV will hook you up once they get the complaint.

Just ask the installer to show you the signal strengths before he leaves. They should all be as close to 100 as he can get them. If they're all at least 95, you'll be fine. Occasional outages will occur during thunderstorms, mostly on the HD channels. The SD channels only got out in really intense storms.
