Attention cordcutters: Mohu AirWave bundles your local TV channels into handy app form

This will be a nice addition to your apps collection, to be used with PS Vue, Sling, etc... enabling you to get your locals on an app, just like those other media apps.

quote:

The Mohu AirWave will cost $150 when it arrives in April or May. (It will initially be a Best Buy exclusive.) The AC-powered TV antenna can be located anywhere in your home that's in range of your Wi-Fi network, and it includes an Ethernet jack for wired reliability, too. It then streams the over-the-air channels to a companion app on your entertainment device of choice. (In many areas, that would include CBS, the owner of CNET.) The company is promising compatibility with Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, iOS, Android and standard web browsers. Additional platforms could follow. And, of course, there are no pesky cable-like subscription fees.

So, a one-time purchase and no subscription fees. Nice!

$150 just so you don't have to switch inputs? Is hitting the source button that much tougher than switching apps?

for those without tv you can watch on ipad, pc, phone, etc and likely will work remotely. It looks like it also has guide capability.

Doesnt seem like a bad deal on the surface.

PS Vue already has a bunch of CBS locals, I would expect this to become obsolete technology before too long. A regular antenna is a much better stop gap solution.

I use an antenna, but I also have PS Vue for locals, except ABC affiliate in Dallas.

However, if I wanted to watch on phone or tablet, and could only get by antenna, then this is a nice option.

Tablo does the same but also gives me the DVR function and can record 4 shows at once, how does this compare?

After a quick read not sure there is much difference other than the DVR of the Tablo. And at a much cheaper price. Will be interested in seeing where this goes.

Your antenna isn't a network tuner as well.

I wouldn't buy it and I'm not saying it's worth it but you're comparing apples and hand grenades.

Reading the fine print, when delivered, it's only good inside your home, and just a single tuner. Bummer. If they figure out the DVR functionality, add additional tuner functionality, multiple streams outside the home, then they have something worthwhile.

This will kill it for the majority.

That and lack of DVR. Wife needs to be able to watch live TV and pause it when necessary (meaning, on-demand the next day is not a solution). I was so close to convincing her to switch to Vue... then Viacom channels got cut.

Damn, man, still fighting this fight?

We are down to Tablo, Sling, and Plex in my house, and I'm about to cancel Sling until football season. We also have Netflix and Prime, but I don't count those since we had those with cable anyway. If you don't have any qualms about "questionable" sources, I highly recommend it. It's very liberating to break free from the schedule of live TV. All of the popular shows are available usually within an hour of airing (some even show up before they air, sometimes days before), but others (Bravo trash, kids shows) sometimes take a day or two. The way I see it, if nobody in this world even bothers to steal a show, it's got to be absolute trash.

If you'd even call it a fight at this point. Once Vue lost Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, and TV Land, I pretty much surrendered. Vue wasn't even my end-game. Just a stepping stone to actual cord-cutting. I was going to look into automating the torrenting of shows and whatnot, then my house flooded, so that kind of went on the backburner for a while. Once I build a dedicated torrent box, I'll re-engage the fight.

I have a pretty decent antenna, my problem is I don't have a window close to my tv so my reception is hit or miss. It worked well enough for football season but if this is going to get me cbs and the like I'll probably give it a go.

Thread Hijack.....

How does PS Vue work exactly? Do you have to own a PlayStation in order to subscribe?

Pros / cons of Vue versus Amazon Fire TV?

TIA.

No playstation required if you have an Amazon fire TV.
You download the app within Amazon Fire TV, start a free trial with Vue and that's it.

Vue gives you a bunch of live HD streaming channels for a much lower price than cable.
