AT&T is considering selling DirecTV, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The telecom giant has weighed several options, the Journal reported, including breaking off DirecTV into its own company and combining DirecTV with Dish Network Corp.
AT&T shares rose 1% after hours on the report. Shares of Dish rose 4%.

Following the publication of the Journal article, Reuters — citing a source familiar with the matter — reported that AT&T Inc and Dish Network Corp are not in discussions over a deal, due to regulatory issues.
When asked about a combined DirecTV and Dish, AT&T CFO John Stephens made the following comment at last week's Bank of America Merrill Lynch conference:

quote:

"So there's been some stories out there about the industrial logic about putting two satellite providers. That's been tried from a regulatory perspective. It hasn't been successful and I don't know that there's any change in that regulatory perspective. So understanding industrial logic, put quite frankly, it's been tried and has been rejected."

quote:

AT&T declined to comment on the report. Dish had no comment on the story.

DirecTV has been bleeding satellite TV subscribers with users shifting to cheaper online streaming services like Netflix Inc and Amazon.com Inc's Prime service.

AT&T lost 778,000 premium TV subscribers, which includes DirecTV users in the second quarter, more than the 544,000 it lost in the prior quarter, and expects the video losses to continue in the current quarter.
Elliot Management, which owns a $3.2 billion stake in AT&T, has pushed the company to divest from DirecTV. AT&T is trying to circumvent pay TV with HBO Max.

The hedge fund urged the company to end its acquisition spree to focus on improving its business, while criticizing the $85 billion purchase of media company TimeWarner Inc last year and the $49 billion deal for DirecTV in 2015.

Depending on the buyer this could be hilariously bad for AT&T.

The right buyer could see the subscribers shoot through the roof since many cord cutters are leery of the future with every media outlet taking control over their online offerings separately (CBS app, NBC app, HBO app, etc.). Lots of potential cord cutters have been waiting for the situation online to shake out or mature also. Current cord cutters already fed-up with needing multiple devices and multiple apps are reconsidering and swapping back to the old standards too.

Be hilarious for AT&T to sell and then watch DirecTv subscriptions have a near vertical subscriber bump up.

AT&T will continuously become less relevant and bleed customers till they eventually go out of business.

It has not occurred to them that you must operate differently when customers have options than they did when they had a monopoly.

I hope they sell. Direct TV has turned to shite since being bought out.

Used to be awesome customer service. Now not so much.

AT&T is killing DirecTV one customer at a time. I'm not so sure the government would allow DirecTV to merge with Charlie

I think it's a bad trend that everyone is getting "take my ball and go home" mentality over their content, forcing viewers to sign up for various apps, etc.
A one source for everything should be a breath of fresh air and that is what DirecTV could end up being.
Imagine if each movie studio had it's own theaters and you had to go to a different one depending on who's movie it is you're going to.
Imagine food companies having their own grocery stores and you had to drive around to get different products

At&t is rolling out a set-top-box service to replace directv. It will be an IP based system that doesn't require At&t internet.

They are mulling over whether this will suffice for their business model or maybe they still need OTA delivery system.

I was in the DirecTV Now free trial period, and was leaning towards picking that up, when they decided to change all their packages with a result of a 20 - 25% increase in pricing. Canceled the trial period and went with Sling.

I dont understand this. I have zero interest in going back to Directv or something like that.

I have YoutubeTv ($50 a month) Netflix (covered by Tmobile) Disney+ (paid $140 for 3 years).

Why on earth would i consider going back to Direct Tv?

Because CBS has their own service, and they're likely to continue making their content exclusive. NBC is launching a new service soon, and they are in the process of pulling their content from other streaming services to make it exclusive. As you know, Disney is doing the same. I expect this trend to continue, until we will probably end up with every network with their own services and their own content, and if we want say 20 channels we'd be paying anywhere from a few bucks a month to $10+ a month for EACH channel.

Depends on location and situation. to flip it around, I pay $10/month for DirecTV 150+ channels as I am out of contract.

Why would I ever cut the cord?

I’m calling bullshite unless I see a copy of the bill.

Typically directv only goes up when your contract ends as you stop receiving agreed upon discounts.

After the 2 year contract is up Directv will offer discounts (credits) to keep you if you call.

I'll gladly post a shot of the bill. What is a good hosting site to post it to so I can link here?

When your contract ends, the price does go up until you call them. When you are out of contract there are a lot more discounts available as they know you can leave easier.

This is my internet + DirecTV bill. My internet is supposed to be $40 but I get $10/month off for bundling directv and then also get unlimited data.

I pay $9.92 for directv/month. At&t is paying me about $0.08/month to use Directv. I have to call once a year to get these discounts but I do not have to agree to any new contract. It is quite awesome for me.

No wonder they're considering selling if they're giving out deals like this. They're losing their arse on that.

We will all be long dead before this happens. I routinely see businesses paying 300-400 month for 2 or 3 POTs. Pretty high markup for cabling that's 30+ years old.
