Berhalter - another in the LONG LINE of retarded USMNT managers.

This has been my concern the whole time. I don't want to believe his ego is this big that he would jeopardize advancing.

Gregggg has made it pretty clear he wants his vibes guys and no questioners.

If Gio can help us score goals against Iran, Gio needs to be on the pitch regardless of any rift.
Nothing else should matter.
People really need to listen to what Wynalda said, about Gregg asking Gio to lie to the media about his fitness.

I would be wary of believing anything from Wynalda. Attention seeking has always been his thing.
Reddit comment I thought was good:

This is ridiculous.
If you believe Berhalter isn't playing Reyna despite Reyna being 100% ready to go, you believe Berhalter either:
• ?Has personal beef with a player so severe that he would risk his job rather than play him
• ?Is so staggeringly incompetent he believes Reyna isn't good enough to play
And, you believe those things despite Berhalter subbing Reyna on today. Yes, he played him on too late to have a real impact, but I'd argue that was because Berhalter is a conservative coach who didn't want to break up the hold the US had on the game until Southgate forced him to, in addition to having to wait 6 minutes to put Aaronson on.
The much more believable option? Reyna had some "tightness" or nagging minor injury in camp, he thought he was 100% ready to go at game time, but Berhalter wasn't convinced and wanted to protect his athlete from himself until later in the tournament.
We're not Brazil, where losing Neymar isn't a big deal even past the Round of 16 because their B side could probably win the World Cup. We need all hands on deck.
And before anyone says "athletes know their own bodies", as someone who played sports in college, no, they don't. I know way too many people who pushed themselves into early returns or played through injuries, and some ended up permanently ending their college careers because of it. Reyna is 20 years old and hypercompetitive. He's absolutely going to systematically overrate his own fitness and believe he's ready to go before he actually is.
It's not surprising that his teammates and father back him because A) parents are obviously biased toward their children and B) Gio is probably closer to his teammates than Gregg is.
Hopefully, this is all manufactured drama and Gregg either is in control or can re-establish control and we'll see Reyna playing more minutes against Iran and later in the tournament.

While I agree somewhat that Wynalda has the propensity to provide verbal headlines, it’s a pretty dangerous one to do now regarding timing.
But it doesn’t look good Berhalter “clarifying” his statement which can be perceived as a walk-back.
quote:
'He was fit to play, Berhalter did lie to the media and say that it was an injury, asked the player to kinda go along with that story which caused a rift between the two of them. And now he's on the bench, which is really unfortunate, this situation should've been handled very differently.' While Berhalter said there was a 'last-minute check done' on the oft-injured Reyna before the 1-1 draw with Wales, the winger said he felt 'really good' after the match. Berhalter later clarified that Reyna's absence vs. Wales was a 'coach's decision' and he was available for the match.

Yea, but Wynalda named names, specifically Claudio. Claudio will have to confirm or deny.

Lest we are forgetting that John Brooks isn’t on the 26 because of a personal rift with Greg…
This is very believable.

I think that CWill post makes a lot of sense, and I think Wynalda could be telling the truth (in his mind) but not the whole truth.
My first thought was the rift is about Reyna’s physical condition. Not a rift because of Gio partying or banging escorts or Gregg hating Gio but something as simple as Gregg thinking Gio isn’t as healthy as he thinks he is.
And the subbing on of Gio yesterday gives a lot of weight to that a) Gregg thought Gio was healthier Friday than Monday and b) Gregg isn’t freezing out Gio.
Now Gregg could be totally wrong about Gio’s physical condition at the moment but I don’t view it as some weird freeze out.

It's possible that this is true and it's believable, but also Wynalda is a piece of shite so who knows.

Wynalda is an attention whore but I don’t think he would mention Claudio by name if he was making things up out of malice.
A game of telephone gone awry, with plenty of missing details is more likely imo.

Maybe, but I trust the USMNT doc and trainers to get it right. They’ve been doing this for 20 years.

Brooks isn’t in Qatar because he only played 10 minutes (against Portuguese fourth division opposition) in the past 6 months.

Everybody ITT is speculating, which is understandable because some of us hate Gregg and some want to be positive.
But Gregg asking Gio to lie to the media about his fitness isn’t speculation. It’s a specific assertion that’s either a lie or a fact. Hard to believe Wynalda would fabricate something like that.

Gregg definitely plays favorites
At least he brought Gio on this time
Southgate is getting ripped for leaving Foden on the bench

I wondered the same and asked/texted my English friends and this was one of their replies:

What Mason Mount does to stay on I do not know. He must have pictures of Southgate in blackface.

Who are the players that Gregg is rumored to have problems with?
Brooks is the big one but I have also heard Miazga. Anyone else?
I think Pefok is really just about Gregg’s assessment of tactics.
Fwiw the lack of any leak on what the conflict between Gregg and the players in question is pretty remarkable.

This probably has more to do with a lot of the media that covers the team act more like cheerleaders and are afraid of losing their buddy status with those in charge
