Norway conceding the group to the French and are fine with a 2nd place finish?

That would set the Norwegians up to take on the Ivory Coast in the R32

ETA: would also essentially confirm Germany vs. France in the R16
can see why it makes sense for Norway.

Get some rest, play Ivory Coast R32 then Brazil/Japan R16 instead of having to go through Germany R16. USA is fortunate to not have the path some of these giants do in first couple rounds

This seems much harder to me than the path of someone unknown in R32 then Germany in R16.

The phrase “start on the bench” has always triggered me

If the goal is to present a clear message within a character limit this is a terrible way to start a sentence that ultimately says the player will be on the bench.

"Erling Haaland will start Norway's World Cup Group I clash"

Agreed. Germany and Brazil are about the same, but you would think having the easier first game would be a selling point.

With the utmost respect to the Tartan Army, my Mexico hatred makes me want them to have a tougher draw than Scotland. Those boys would absolutely melt in Azteca.

Maybe, but they'd have to beat, not draw, France to do so based on current GD. Let's be charitable and say their odds of beating France were 25% with a full squad. So the most likely outcomes are:

1. You play your starters.
- 75% chance to play Ivory Coast with starters on 4 days rest (1 less than the opponent)
- 25% chance to play (likely Sweden) with starters on 4 days rest (1 less than the opponent)

2. You play your backups.
- 95% chance to play Ivory Coast with starters on 8 days rest
- 5% chance to play (likely Sweden) with starters on 8 days rest

Add in the fact that the R32 game against Ivory Coast would be in a climate-controlled dome in Dallas, while winning the group would mean an afternoon game outdoors in New York, and it's pretty clear why they're doing what they're doing.
