And it happened fast. The decision was almost instantaneous. Like he didn’t even have time to review the entire play and was just shown a still image.

“USA player make serious foul. Decision red”

Which is what is complete bullshite. I can go up and lay my foot on someone’s ankle and take a still pic. Thats gonna look very bad. Still frames are for people bitching that it SHOULD have been a red when the ref didn’t give one because at full speed it’s much less malicious. In this case, again unprecedented in this tourney, in a game where the ref didn’t give 5-6 yellows he should have, they used the still frame to justify a red. At best it’s bias, at worst it’s corruption

fricking this. Ref was content to just let all sorts of wild shite happen, and that is the first card he gives in the game? Straight to jail

ETA That better be a fat fingered downvote

The part of this is that they interpreted this as a tackle or challenge from Flo. If you look at the last second of the play in a bubble it looks that way and that's all that VAR kept showing on a loop. What they didn't take into consideration was the contact from the defender that threw him off balance leading to his foot coming down on his ankle

It literally says in their protocols NOT to use slow motion or still shots to review intensity of a foul for this exact reason.

If they did, there would be 5-6 reds cards every match because most tackles have angles and still shots that look back and could be a red card in the .1 second.

They ignored that and used slow motion and a still shot to initiate the review, AND sent that slow motion and still shot to the on field ref. Every step of the process was against their own rules to issue that ref card, which is a huge issue.

Correct. Had this been always going on, the ref was card happy, or the result was a severe injury causing the player to leave the field, I’d have less of a problem with it. It’s that even without this horrible decision, the game was still poorly refereed, with 5-6 clear pull backs or fouls on our build ups with no warnings from him.

Is your name Jason Moore, Troy Garner or Ryan Conway?

They screwed us for the Belgium game. I feel like we have to hold out for PKs... maybe I'm being extreme. But I'm pissed because of that card that I couldn't even celebrate the win, at all. I mean I didn't feel much after that win but 'oh great, we now get to get knocked out by Belgium again.'

Same here.. and it annoyed me to see everyone singing John Denver and celebrating like we did something when we're most likely going to do the same thing we always do -- get sent home in the round of 16

Man that's crazy to feel that way. Does it suck not having him, of course. Will we be underdogs, yeah. But they can absolutely still beat Belgium.

Correct, everyone should have just marched quietly out of the stadium instead of celebrating a knockout win on home soil.

So you were on a 1988 national pool team then? That’s a long time ago old timer

Yeah it just flat out wasn't a tackle or challenge. jockeying for position and trying to regain balance should never be considered a challenge or tackle.

They can- like said before Belgium is old and slow. Pepe better not be the answer up top because he is slow as well. I’d rather add Reyna in the midfield with single striker Pulisic up front

i have been shocked at how slow pepi has looked in this tournament. i almost wondered if he has a slight injury they haven't broadcasted. I'm not the coach, but i absolutely would go with anyone over him.

I was 18 in 1988. Would have been 22 for the ‘92 Olympic team in Barcelona (remember, Olympics are U23).

Back then, there were regional ODP teams and the USOC picked the player pool from them plus the few American pros at that time. That team was stacked; it had Friedel in goal, Lalas, Joe-Max Moore, Cobi Jones, Curt Onalfo, Claudio Reyna , and Manny Lagos. I wasn’t making that squad.

Got it- yes that team was stacked like you said. I never made it past regional team which completely sucked- I’ll blame politics to the day I die on that because if a goal was needed in a game I was playing in I lit the lamp 99/100 times
