Was there a bigger bust than Gedion Zelalem for US soccer?

Made a senior team debut for Arsenal in a FA Cup match for arsenal at barely 17 years of age. 4 career Apps all in cup matches. Loan spells in Scotland, Netherlands and MLS, none of which were successful. Now, the poor soul is in 2nd division in the Netherlands.

Emerson Hyndman is up there, but had nowhere near the hype.

Freddy Adu says hello.

Zelalem was derailed by a bunch of knee injuries, which is tough when you’re not very athletic to begin with.

Hyndman was derailed by injuries too and not finding a stable club situation. I was so hyped about him starting for Fulham in their first championship game of the season as an 18 year old.

Julian Green is pretty similar. Ran off the bench at 18 in the champions league for bayern and was given a seat on a 23 man WC roster just to secure his commitment. Hits a pure luck goal for the US.

But like Zelalem, Adu, and Busio, all the skill in the world doesn’t matter when you move with speed and agility of a country club pickle ball champion.

I don’t think Green got the same hype as zelalem. I feel like Green’s ceiling was laid bare before too much hype could build.

Luis Gil has had a very disappointing career as well.

27 year old Emerson Hyndman, 29 year old Luis Gil, 34 year old Freddy Adu, and 26 year old Gedion Zelalem have to be immensely disappointing.

Having none of those guys pan out, plus 30 year old Cody Cropper, 36 year old Danny Szetela, and 28 year old Julian Green (better career than most but very disappointing when you factor in expectations) are a major reason why there was a lost generation of US soccer between Donovan/Dempsey and the current one.

It's so wild that Tim Ream is older than Freddy.

The hype for Green was real.

Yep. Jurgy was pumping him up like our next great hope.

But the dude scored in a WC knockout game and no one can take that away from him. Plus we were waaaaaaaaaay more mad at Brad fricking Davis getting called up (and starting vs Germany) than we were about Green making the team.

Adu's stats surprise me

take away his 87 games with DC

he made 124 appearances the rest of his professional career with 17 goals

Adu was only effective as a teen in DC, his spell in Turkey that was half a season, and in Philly.

He was good in that Gold Cup run in 2009 or 2011, too

It’s weird bc he has only one elite skill, which is the most valued in pick-up soccer and the least valued in elite soccer: taking people one-on-one

It’s kind of like being a running back in the NFL after the analytics revolution

2011. It was a weird call up out of nowhere, but he ended up setting up the game-winning goal in the semifinal against Panama, assisted the first goal in the final against Mexico and sprung the attack on our second goal.

And that was his last match with the USMNT.

I remember Arsene Wenger saying Zelalem was the next Cesc Fabregas. Wish he was right

Who was the other really young prospect who emerged at the same time as Ben Lederman?

Based on his career in Europe, Lederman could have been maybe an occasional reserve for the USMNT.

Konrad?

They were a La Masia at the same time.

Maybe it was Konrad. I thought there was another white dual national as well, but I might just be mixing it up and double counting Lederman.

Never forget that Julian Green hit the equalizer against France in the run up to their World Cup.

Big game player.

Legend.

Juan Agudelo After he scored on his debut for the USMNT had a lot of hype that went nowhere.
