The only 2 things MLS is good for is improving other CONCACAF national teams and lining the pockets of NFL owners using it as a tax shelter.

And there it is

I agree that players that make it in Europe are probably better, but really? Come on.

Also you probably have no idea that Berhalter coached in Europe

This is a horrible hot take. The MLS academy system is doing work. Did you even watch the U20 team? Most of those guys came from MLS academies.

The u-20 team that got to the exact same stage as the last two u-20 teams? Yeah there's so much talent that came in from those last two u-20 teams, as evidenced by the last two years of results from the USMNT.

Only in comparison to nothing do the MLS academies look like they're doing work. Compared to European academies they might as well be college soccer. Any day spent at an MLS team once a good prospect turns 18 is wasted.

Conversely, all our concacaf lesser countries have benefited greatly from the MLS. Now the bulk of their players play in the exact same league as the bulk our players, especially bc MLS teams like to develop players from those countries bc they're cheap. This has played a large role in the increasing parity between us and previously much less talented concacaf teams.

There is a great analogy in there about our domestic immigration policy as well. We bring in lesser talent at our own national demise, all the while thinking we’re improving ourselves.

In the Swedish second division right? Hardly what I'm referring to.

And yes I'm serious. As long as we reward players miring themselves in mediocrity in the MLS a good number of our players will refuse to push themselves by going overseas, thereby causing stagnation.

True, really the only part that is true is it has helped other CONCACAF countries and lesser South American countries have a better league to land their mid tier and better talent.

European leagues have existed for almost 150 years. Our academy program is 10 years old you dipshit. We’re the only country in the world to reach the quarters in the past 3 world cups.

I mean what's the reaction supposed to be when we miss the WC for the first time ever, waste a year without a coach, finally hire a coach we could've hired the day we fired Arena, and now in our run up to our first competitive games in 18 months we play arguably two of the worst games the USMNT have ever played?

Missing out on the WC was supposed to be this big shock to the system that shook up the way US Soccer did everything, and instead it seems like we're doubling down on this MLS centric approach and we look somehow worse than we did 18 months ago. How is there supposed to be a positive outlook?

Hopefully, Berhalter stops running out these absurd formations and tactics and makes better selections. And we can eke out some wins against Panama and T&T

Yeah, we should spite the team and stop calling up our best striker because he plays in MLS

Crappy time for US to play a couple of poor games with the Women’s World Cup ongoing. Instead of producing something people would want to watch, they give us that?

The oldest people from the 2015 U20 WC are only 24. You usually hope 2-4 players from your U20 squad can become regulars on the senior team.

From the 2015 squad, we have Steffen, Miazga, and Arriola as regulars. We have some more fringe guys from that group (CCV, Moore, Acosta, etc). Also had some guys get injuries that stunted their growth (Hyndman and Zelalem).

From the 2017 squad, we have Adams and Sargent. A few carry-overs from 2015 (CCV, Zelalem). Some other guys that are starting to make noise, but not on the international level yet (Sabbi, Trusty, EPB).

I mean, shite, how quickly do you think these 18-19 year olds should make the jump to the national team?

Historically speaking, there's virtually no correlation at all between the success of youth teams in tournaments and the success of the senior team in the years following. But maybe the US will be different

Newsflash: The player pool doesn't change drastically over 2 years.
