Oh god, Hope Solo and Abby Wambach from the previous generation for real characters. This group seems to be the most harmless and bland one yet.
Rapinoe reminds me of those Eastern European midfielders who would smoke a pack a day and not run out nearly as much as they should have, but they were so good on the ball that managers had to overlook that. She doesn’t do much for long stretches, she has a subpar work rate, and yet she is still one of the most dangerous players in the world.
In Rapinoe’s case, I think it’s just age and a little bit of not pushing herself to be even more elite.

I think Italy is also surprised by Italy.
Most people thought they’d be fighting for 3rd in their group behind Australia and Brazil. They’re very solid defensively, and just dangerous enough in the attack. Eerily similar to the 2006 men’s team that won the World Cup.

Lots of set piece goals these knockouts. Netherlands has scored all four knockout round goals from set pieces, USA has 3/4, England has had a few, etc.
