As a sports fan, this sucks.

As a Spurs fan, I love it.

And it’s not going away. Best for everyone to get on board. This league will soon be THE league and will include probably 24 teams in Europe that no longer play in their domestic league.

Just read through this thread (and unfortunately some of the arguing), but just wanted to state a few things that have already been mentioned.

- This is absolutely awful all around. When a guy like Stan Kroenke is on one side of the debate, just stand on the other side to be right.

- As much we all hate FIFA, UEFA, etc., I am glad to see governing bodies and domestic leagues trying to stop these snakes. This could completely ruin domestic and international football. No more cinderella stories, no more longstanding rivarlies and tradition, etc. I mean, the fall if they are banned from their domestic leagues, World Cup, and Euros is wild. shite, they could be forcing three of the semi-finalists to drop out of the UCL. Hopefully, that scares them.

- When the answer is about bottom lines and money only, it's wrong. This is entertainment, culture, and a way of life for some people. Turning this into even more of a cash grab fricking sucks. One of the best parts about this sport is that not everything is just for a profit. Not surprised to see the German and French teams staying out of this.

- Anyone arguing for the "free market" and that bullshite is just an idiot. Just stop, you are wrong and should continue to lick the boots of these greedy multi-billionaires who don't love the game.

Most of the 12 teams in this have been pretty crappy even though they needed to good to get into champions league. Now that they don’t have to be good to get into this super league I see the level of play getting worse.

If only we had numerous models which prove this.

Regardless of how people feel about this and what it's repercussions will be, can we all just agree that the name "Super League" is really, really stupid.

Exactly.

The answer to the increasing amount of money in the sport would be to make it all more equitable, and give more to the players. What the hell did Kroneke do in terms of building Arsenal? He did absolutely frick-all since buying them. Arguably FSG has done more for Pool than the other American owners have done for their clubs, but that has more to do with Klopp's genius rather than a structure envisioned and implemented by FSG.

The path the ESL has chosen will be a race to the bottom, and everyone will be worse off for it. The sport as it stands isn't perfect, but the knock-on effect will be terrible for the sport as a whole. All for what? A couple hundred million that these clubs will again use poorly, as evidenced by the Sky deal, which these clubs used, in actual practice, extremely poorly?

Yeah it is going to be really exciting when the Spanish clubs with better youth academies and consistent playing philosophies kick the shite out of London clubs for the next 23 years.

Considering it’s already the name of another Pro league. Yes. It is very dumb.

I think a lot of what Americans don't get about European Club football, but that a College football site like this should, is that most don't have an option on which Club to support. Your fandom is decided on which side of a town, river, or road you are born. It in these distinctions that rivalries are made and give the basis for the FA pyramids across the Continent.

Exactly. The sheer fact that Arsenal is in North London gives meaning to the rivalry with Tottenham, which itself is couched in the unique history of the Football League. Barca's association with Catalan independence gives an added dimension to the rivalry with Madrid, whose association with Franco gives a context to the rivalry which adds to the richness. Imagining AC Milan playing in a supra-national league next to Inter Milan is also an amazing irony. All of that has to be cast aside for the possibility of ensuring these owners can do the bare minimum so they can appease a magical fanbase who doesn't exist yet, who might not exist, and isn't assured to even prefer this league over the desires of local fans should be an affront to anyone who follows the sport.

i have some basic questions

1. what is the actual worry of the Super League? I'm assuming that the clubs stay in their domestic leagues and there is still a UCL, etc. is this just about some clubs getting more money potentially? it seems that all these rivalry and history arguments really boil down to just a money issue

2. what arguments against the Super League exist that don't also apply to the Champion's League?

No automatic places in Champions League. 75% of qualification spots in the Super League would be guaranteed, not earned. That automatically guarantees a lower level of competition (ex: teams like Arsenal and Tottenham being included despite being nowhere near the best teams in their own country this season.)

It's hard to see how that is reality. For example, there are already arguably too many games. You can't add another full 20 team league schedule and not cut out something. Obviously, Champions League is likely the first thing to go. Furthermore, it would decrease the quality of domestic league competition. For example, once it became clear that City was going to win the league, the race for top 4 would basically be meaningless. Teams would be treating premier league games as opportunities for bench players.
