San Diego announced their MLS name today, it'll only take 1 try to guess it

San Diego FC
By my count that's the 8th team with just the city name and FC either before or after. That's not counting the others that added the FC to the name like the Sounders.

Could have been Real San Diego.
Probably should have been San Diego Soccer Club though.
SDSC has a nice ring.

If they called it “Club de Futbol San Diego” that would have been cool but you are spot on “San Diego Football Club” is cringe af.

That and MLS has no clubs
Franchises are the opposite of a football club
The whole situation of how the San Diego franchise started is everything wrong with the league
This never get old

The past 12 teams to enter the league have all had a FC or a SC or something European to their name.
I want MLS to succeed, but hiding 90% of your games behind a paywall on a paid streaming service, coupled with non original team names isn't gonna grow the game and bring in casuals.
No one is gonna decipher or even know about your brand identity in some convoluted team badge. It's astonishing one of the most successful and supported teams, the Timbers, entire identity is built around their name, yet none of the newer teams took note.
Also, Chrome is the main color for San Diego and in their own press release didn't even tie that color to their Naval presence

Houston was the only name to pull off the rip on a more famous team, because it fits the city.

Who cares? Dumb mascot names don’t fit professional soccer.

Tell that to Timbers or Rapids fans. And it's all about branding and drawing interest. How are you going to do that when all the teams have the same identity and nothing to distinguish themselves. I'll argue that Insert Random City FC doesn't fit American sports.

No doubt. Of the original crop of MLS teams only 2 (DC and KC) went the European route with Dallas eventually changing their name as well. Glad the other OGs kept their American way of naming things with City Mascot.

I don’t understand the cultural affinity for calling it soccer yet naming your clubs FC

I don’t mind the logo. I mean it looks like a lazy design but it’s okay

Imo it’s sad because the San Diego loyal were so well supported and should have just been integrated into the league.

Well that’s not how the league works
Nothing is based on merit
Honestly SacTown should have been the next Cali based team

So a dumb mascot name is the secret to branding? It sure worked well for the NY/NJ MetroStars, Tampa Bay Mutiny, Dallas Burn, Kansas City Wiz, and San Jose Clash.
