So USA-Trinidad and Tobago is more indicative than this match?

Go look at the Auburn recruiting thread on the AU board, and you'll Lean RandySavages shtick real quick. Ignore him is much easier than arguing with him.

I'm of the opinion that these friendlies are the proving ground for fringe players, and even some of the veterans, as no coach in their right mind would allow a veteran to coast through any game. Hence why teams take them seriously because it is an excellent way for young players to prove themselves. Lots of positives to take and build on going forward. They are meaningless in terms of result but important for building a team, and after the way we fought back after being dominated in the first 30, and then put moves together like we did with two excellent goals that relied on passing and movement rather than pressing or counter attacking, you have to be pleased.

This, my only point is it's naive and below SCH, or anyone, to use friendly results to justify his position on Jurgen.

dude, quit being a fricking debbie downer and get on the USA pain train or get the frick out of the station.

I'm not convinced that Germany and Netherlands took the second half of those games seriously.

Those guys are at the end of their seasons, have a couple of shite Euro qualifiers (Latvia, Gibraltar) and then they're off to the beach for a month.

That's not AT ALL taking away from what we did in either game. Our boys gave the effort required and executed flawlessly. You can't ask for more, and it's important FOR US to be able to do that more often.

But I do think that it's telling that the second half of these games were pretty different from the first halves.

Aw shite, what will the board do now that one of its golden boys has pointed out the obvious that they don't want to hear?

This doesn't change anything. He's still denigrating the premier national league.

Also, Germany's been utter shite since they won the World Cup.

Yes there is only one tournament every 4 years in soccer.

Good lord.

Here's the issue: Whenever this team wins a big friendly like this, it's cast off as no big deal by the negative types of this board. But when they lose matches like this, it's "look how far away we are" and "this shows Jurgen hasn't done anything for us" from some people.

It can't matter when they lose and not matter when they win. I see too much of that from this board and American soccer fans in general.

(Likewise, we can't go overboard with these results. I know a lot of the threads about us being the best in the world now are tongue-in-cheek, but don't actually get carried away.)

I don't know what to make of this result or of Jurgys tenure in general, so I get happy when we do good and pissed when we suck.

Yesterday we did good.

It's got to be exhausting to be a contrarian in pretty much every soccer thread there is. I'm not even saying TN or Randy are wrong, just that it must be tough getting up the energy to bring in the storm clouds whenever the sun is shining on the Soccer Board.

I understand that frustration and totally agree. I'm not one of those people though. Of course I always hope we win but I also understand the results of these games means next to nothing.

I was never trying to poo poo what we did but when SCH tried to use this as justification for Jurgen support I thought that was pretty silly.

If they go on and use these two games as a spring board for a great performance this summer that's great but the actual results themselves, as they stand now, don't really mean anything.

Even if the USA romps through the Gold Cup, I will expect the retort to be "the competition in CONCACAF is laughable. Wake me up when we beat the big boys".

gotta say, reading some of this thread, I never thought beating the dutch and germany in the same week would be ever viewed as just 'meh.'

I look at friendlies different from most folks. I'm ONLY looking at our individual player performances and (to a lesser extent) team cohesiveness, passing, defensive awareness, etc.

I've found there's no use in deciphering results from friendlies. Between the short time teams are together, often less than full strength rosters and maximum subs, whatever plan you had is usually completely out of the window by the 60th minute anyway.

That's without even touching on the two teams' motivations for the friendly. They could (one or both) be trying guys in different roles, testing formations, tactics or fitness. The level of player interest, commitment and fitness could be far apart. Winning the game may be WAY down the list for one or both teams. (Or in the case of El Salvador a couple of years ago - completely off the list.)

The only time I get my ears up about friendlies is when we look disorganized (Belgium 2013, Ukraine 2014, Ireland 2014) or disinterested (Canada 2013, Scotland 2013). Those are issues that can be solved with proper motivation or proper game management. If they aren't, I'll get pissed.
