With the United States Men’s National Team now officially in the next World Cup cycle, they are reportedly close to accepting an invitation to compete in one of the biggest tournaments in the world. According to a Fox Sports Mexico report, the USMNT, along with Canada, are in talks to participate in the 2024 Copa América.

Former ESPN and Fox Sports and current LAFC play-by-play announcer Max Bretos went a step further, saying that the USMNT’s participation in South America’s continental tournament is “a done deal.”

Since Conmebol only has 10 teams, it routinely invites teams from other confederations to participate in its tournament, which is generally hosted every 4 years. The USMNT has participated in Copa América 4 times, most recently when it hosted the Copa América Centenario in 2016. It finished 4th in that tournament. They also finished 4th in the 1995 Copa América, while they had group stage exits in 1993 and 2007.

Has to happen. With no qualifying for 2026, the USMNT needs to do whatever it can to find meaningful competition in the next four years and concacaf invitationals aren’t it.

I’d like to see the US/Canada/Mexico approach Japan/S. Korea/Australia about launching a trans pacific tournament. Add chile and New Zealand to round out a respectable field of 8. Hold it in 2023 before the Asia teams are engrossed in qualifying.

Good, we should honestly try and get in AFC’s tournament as well, I think they do invites. Basically pull a Qatar.

Please sweet baby Jesus yes! We need a 16-team Copa with both confederations to rival the Euro!

My proposal:
Goal: A 16-team international tournament contested with the ten CONMEBOL teams plus six teams from CONCACAF across four host nations, two each from North and South America, culminating in a match for the champion of the Americas in the international city of Miami!

Format: Round-robin group matches hosted by Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and the United States at domestic stadiums, including the notional sites below:

Brazil: Sao Paulo, Fortaleza, Belo Horizonte
Argentina: Cordoba, Avellaneda, La Plata
Mexico: Puebla, Guadalupe (Monterrey), Guadalajara
US: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles

Knockout round matches played in the national capitals of Brasilia, Buenos Aires, Mexico City and Washington, DC, with the winner of each group hosting the runner-up of the adjacent group (A1-B2, B1-A2, C1-D2, D1-C2).

The semi-finals/continental championships played at Rio di Janeiro and Houston.

Copa Americas Championship Match in Miami.

Groups: The groups could be determined by draw, but a notional seeding might look like:

Group A: Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia
Group B: Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Venezuela
Group C: Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama
Group D: USA, Uruguay, Canada, Jamaica

Result: A tournament that would rival Euro 2024 in terms of top teams and competitive matches, provide a World Cup-like atmosphere for the competing teams and their fans, and generate substantial profits for both confederations, raising the game’s profile throughout the Americas!

With no qualifications matches for the US, this would be perfect to allow the team to develop more.

I would rather just get a Copa invite and not open the door to more CONCACAF teams, else we’re just basically playing a slightly tougher Gold Cup until the semis or finals.

Agreed. Forgot CONCACAF teams not in the big three. Fill out the rest of Copa with Japan/Korea/Australia, etc.

I would go a step further and say there is no other option for us but to make sure we get in.

Surprised that Mexico isn’t going in on this.

Been saying we need to be in the Copa America forever. We need those pressure games that you can't replicate playing a friendly.

FIFA could restore some good will from the fans by bringing this back. borderline criminal that they got rid of it in the first place

Did they get rid of it to make way for the Nations League? I never understood the reasoning for binning the Confederations Cup. It was a great tournament and generated a lot of excitement for the WC.
