Infantino’s whole strategy and rise to power is shamelessly exploiting FIFA’s governance loophole that gives the same amount of voting power to Sierra Leone and Vietnam as it does to France and Germany. Everything he does is catered to whipping the votes of poor African and Asian countries at the expense of the traditional footballing powers.

I think this is more the straw that broke the camel’s back. UEFA realized that they were going to be completely shut out of decision making going forward based on this dynamic. A boycott like this is really the only play they have left, and was just a matter of when they played it.

Give his predecessor credit, Sepp Blatter was the one who wrote this playbook. That’s how he got elected to lead FIFA to begin with - via promises to Africa, Asia, Central America, and the Caribbean. FIFA launched the Goal Programme right after he took over and spent the 2000’s funneling infrastructure money in exchange for immovable voting blocs. He was completely untouchable and would have retired on his own terms if not for the FBI. Infantino learned from the best and is unique only for how comically brazen he has become

Glad to see UEFA take a stand on private investment but the core problem fix is forcing FIFA to completely overhaul its governance model. 1 country 1 vote is not tenable. I’m not sure they’re ready to lead that fight but that’s the battle that needs to happen to even begin to unwind the rot

Asian confederation hasn’t officially rejected but they also had an initial negative reaction.

Haven’t seen anything from Commebol but so far the only federation to speak out in support of the proposal is Africa.

I can't see how they thought this would pass, considering it completely screws over the smaller nations in terms of voting representation.
