I really wish I understood how this part of soccer works. But how would winning the Nations league be a waste of time?

I mean, like the Gold Cup, it's just another arbitrary tournament to bide time until the World Cup. So it's cool when we're playing Mexico in a final, but other than that pride, it means nothing.

But I think the biggest reason why a lot of people are upset with the Nations League is that is takes up international dates where we could be playing friendlies against UEFA or CONMEBOL teams instead of playing against CONCACAF minnows.

This.

Hell, there's half a dozen countries from Asia and Africa I'd rather we play.

Why are we spending so much time in this thread talking about Canada?

Canada has only appeared in the Hex once, when they finished last in the inaugural Hex for the 1998 WC cycle.

Because they are getting much better and probably would have been a favorite to qualify under the old system.

Now they have an incredibly tough road ahead. They essentially need to beat us and win their Nations League group to even have a chance.

Canada is rising. They are starting to put serious money into Canada Soccer. It’s a matter of time before they become a pain in the arse in qualifying.

With Kaye, Davies, David, etc., they can be a force in CONCACAF.

I’m not saying they’ll be up there with US/ Mexico hegemony, but they can turn into Honduras, TT level pain in the arse if they continue to develop.

Me neither, but they can become that #3 team. I think Costa Rica is starting a downturn. They didn't play well in the Gold Cup and brought a pretty old team.

Canada has some young studs coming up. They also have some players like Cyle Larin, who if he ever got his head out his arse, could be very good.

Canada missed the hex by 1 point for 2018 and by 1 point for 2014.

I just hate this change because I thought we really had a good format that at least gave every country a more open pathway. This is African federation levels of stupid in format IMO

Canadians are gonna be pissed

They have a year to move up ~10 spots in the FIFA rankings and pass Panama and El Salvador. I don't think the recent Gold Cup results have been accounted for yet. Sucks for Canada that they are in our Nations League group.

Why would they want to? I don't see how Canada would finish in the top 4 of the hex so they would be eliminated. Canada has a much better chance of qualifying by winning the 7-35 tournament then beating the 4th hex team.

That's a ton of games that they would have to win just to have to play the 4th place team in the hex to then have to play a CONMEBOL team to qualify. They'd have a much better chance of qualifying through the hex. They could definitely finish in the top 4.

Panama and Honduras finished in the top 4 last Hex.

Canada would rather be in the Hex and have a chance to directly qualify than have to play more games against minnows just to qualify for the playoff and then have to play the inter-continental playoff.

Lol like Honduras and fricking El Salvador deserve to be in the top 6. Canada, Curaçao, and Haiti are all clearly better teams right now.
