of that list 4 will ever have a legit shot at the WC

There's no clear #3 right now after Mexico and the US. Any of those from that list can steal some points and finish in the top 4 of the hex.

I agree with letting the countries that make you play on cricket fields get their shot at the big dogs in the early stages

instead its just closing off an already predetermined pool even more

Can you show me anywhere in this thread where I've approved of this? I simply stated that Nations League now means a lot more to many countries, which is nothing less than a fact.

re: New CONCACAF WCQ Format
So to summarize:

1. Six highest FIFA ranked teams play a Hex.
2. #1-3 advance to the WC. #5 and #6 are dropped from qualifying. #4 is on stand-by.
3. Simultaneously #7-35 play a tournament.
4. Winner of that tournament plays #4.
5. Winner of that game plays in the intercontinental playoff for the possible 4th CONCACAF bid.

I appreciate that this ends the lopsided pre-Hex games and we can play better teams instead, but the treatment of #5 and #6 is nonsense.
- You could see a decent side slip early and have no shot at recovery and that #7-35 tournament winner be far inferior.
- You could see #5 and #6 be totally unworthy and just in the Hex due to FIFA ranking nonsense and force better sides to make a much longer climb against competition that are wastes of tune-ups.
- Particularly with Costa Rica's golden generation gone, #3 in Hex could look like crap by the end while other sides in the other tournament are coming into form and more worthy of a spot. The advantage of the Hex at the end is you usually end up with the teams in best form for the Cup.

The fact that a CONCACAF team can qualify for the World Cup by only playing ONE Top 6-ranked CONCACAF side (who by the playoff could be great or in disarray, who knows) is disgraceful.

Regardless of your opinion on it, it obviously isn't pointless for this cycle.

The second part of the qualifiers, played across a Group Stage and knockout phase, will involve the Concacaf Member Associations ranked 7-35 according to the FIFA Ranking

Wait... so if you don't finish in the top 3 of the opening Hex, do you not get put in the group stage?

re: New CONCACAF WCQ Format
Aside from the FIFA ranking itself being garbage-in garbage-out (reminder that Belgium is #1 right now), I don't know how CONCACAF can argue it's fair to teams on the Hex bubble when the rankings themselves are a function of years' worth of prior play. Teams are punished for prior scheduling and in-game tactical decisions and essentially have no opportunity given the time before June 2020 to inflate their ranking.

To consistently be the worst-run confederation when there are so many other worthy candidates is admittedly impressive.

No. If you finish 4th in the hex, you move on to play the winner of that group of teams. 5th and 6th place gets nothing.

No. The Hex and the #7-35 tournament are concurrent.

Logically the Hex would come first, #1-3 would advance, and #4-35 would play in an even 32-team tournament (instead of 29) to decide who gets to play AFC/OFC/CONMEBOL.

But CONCACAF.

There's not really time to do that unless you start the hex immediately.

re: New CONCACAF WCQ Format
The fact that this is so heavily weighted on the FIFA rankings is so corrupt.

Certainly not enough time in this cycle.

But if they're going to do have split competitions, #5-6's non-involvement in the side tournament is grotesquely unfair. And the notion that a #7-35 team can qualify for the World Cup by ONLY beating #4 in a playoff - never even playing the US/Mexico/Costa Rica or #5/#6 - is shameful.

A side tournament could also be significantly truncated. Home-and-away group matches over the normal FIFA windows while the Hex is ongoing. Have the Hex conclude slightly earlier and give #4-6 a bye to the minor tournament knockout round. Drop 2-leg knockout matches in favor of single matches in universally convenient Miami over 2-3 weeks in Summer 2021.

Or we can leave it like it is, which is arguably preferable to the integrity of the game.

The USMNT is currently ranked 30th as of June 14th. So would that mean we'd be place in a lower group (if that ranking holds)? I'm guessing we'll move up somewhat after the gold cup is factored in.

re: New CONCACAF WCQ Format
Is there anything to prevent a team from gaming the system by scheduling one game a week against a terrible team and just racking up ~50 wins in a year?
