The first part of the Concacaf qualifiers, which will be played in a Hexagonal format, will be contested between the top six ranked Concacaf Member Associations based on the FIFA Ranking published after the FIFA window of June 2020. After home-and-away round robin play during the FIFA Match windows of September, October and November of 2020 and March and September of 2021, the top three teams will qualify directly to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

The second part of the qualifiers, played across a Group Stage and knockout phase, will involve the Concacaf Member Associations ranked 7-35 according to the FIFA Ranking published after the FIFA window of June 2020. For the group stage, these 29 participating Concacaf Member Associations will be divided into eight groups (five groups of four teams and three groups of three teams). After home-and-away round robin play during the FIFA Match windows of September, October and November of 2020, the first-place finishers in each of the eight group will qualify for the knock out stage.

The quarter finals, semifinals and final matches of the knock out phase will all be played in a home-and-away direct elimination format, during the FIFA Match windows of March, June and September 2021.

The winner of the knockout phase will face the fourth-place finisher of the Hexagonal group to determine the Concacaf representative in the FIFA intercontinental playoff. The home-and-away playoff matches between the two Concacaf representatives will take place during the FIFA Match Window of October 2021.

It’s just a proposition at this point, right? In either case it’s a really fricking stupid way to do qualifying. Like Africa level qualifying bad.

ETA shite they are really doing this

They have a year to move up ~10 spots in the FIFA rankings and pass Panama and El Salvador. I don't think the recent Gold Cup results have been accounted for yet. Sucks for Canada that they are in our Nations League group.

nothing really changes six countries will always be legit in the run for making the WC

USA
Mex
Costa Rica
Panama
Honduras
Canada
Jamaica or T&T

The power shift in the federation isn't going to happen

the nations league is a waist of time esp when a majority of the federation has countries that have amateur level talent

So? It still makes it much more important for Jamaica, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama, Curacao, T&T, and Haiti for this cycle. Many o them had decent showings in the Gold Cup which could bring their FIFA rankings much closer together. Nations League is going to be massive for them to get into the hex.

They don't need to make much progress.

in the scope of how big the federation is its not MANY teams

of that list 4 will ever have a legit shot at the WC

that and winning the lower tiers of the nations league vs some really bad teams isn't going to sky rocket FIFA rankings.

I don't think the Nations League was ever meant for the powers. It's for the Central America and Caribbean teams to play in competitions they have some prayer of winning with the goal of over time bridging the gaps.

We obviously aren't leaving the Confederation for WCQ reasons at minimum, but I think we and Mexico are inevitably destined to be permanent 16-team Copa America participants and get out of these competitions that do nothing for us.

The whole thing is bullshite. I want to see teams like Curaçao, Haiti, etc muck things up in qualifying. We all know concacaf doesn’t want to lose their shirts after 2019 debacle and 2014 near catastrophe with Mexico.

But they don't have to skyrocket up the rankings. They just have to get in the top 6 of CONCACAF. And the Nations League matches will still count more than friendlies in the FIFA equation.

I can see that angle or its just a money grab that no one was really asking to do. Lets be real 80% of the countries in the B and C leagues will never bridge the gap bc they don't take the sport serious. Its all about cricket. Hell we have teams that Conmebol won't accept

But let the competition determine that. Let em play and see what happens. We all know it’s about protecting US/ Mexico hegemony.
