NBC Scores big with Soccer gamble

The thing I can't figure out - are they able to capture, in any way, the many thousands of peple across the country watching these games in bars?
I don't think the rating will have any way to know the actual viewership numbers because of that?
Really not as high as I had hoped....
...but thats a big improvement.

Worse than the WNBA? Thats bad. I'm hoping for more growth here - by coincidence, this is the first MLS season where I have paid attention past the end of August (when college football, NFL, and BPL start), so I am a growth of one, at least.
Keep praying I'll get a Nielsens box at some point - watch for the soccer ratings jump!

People enjoy watching good soccer. MLS while it is improved, it's not what I consider good soccer. I get tired of seeing long ball after long ball hoping the fastest guy on the field can out run the defense. I know it's not always like that but the Houston vs KC game was.

Yeah I think this is a problem. Also, some bad matches are on national tv. I think they need to schedule what games they want on national tv like they do with college football.

ouch
They really need to work a deal with NBC where they air MLS games right after EPL to get some overrun. I know I'm always kind of like "We'll it's 11:30 in the morning and all the games are over." I'd stick around if there was a slate of MLS coming on at noon.

Yeah, show a Eastern Conference game at about noon or 12:30 and maybe follow that with a Western Conference game.

I wish the MLS had one table instead of two conferences. And less emphasis on playoffs. The shield is cool, but does anyone really care? That would be the champion in any other league.

Sounds like a good idea and maybe doing a weekly Friday night game would be a good idea as well.

I believe that I've read that Friday night is the worst night for television. It probably came up when people were down on the Cotton Bowl a few years back because it was on a Friday night and nobody would watch.

It is for me. Like someone said, I wake up on Sat and Sunday mornings and know that BPL will be on multiple channels. It's now routine viewing.

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that MLS can't beat out the WNBA. I've been re-evaluating my life and the world we live in all day.

its typically where networks toss underperforming shows. i guess the thinking is the beginning of the weekend means less butts sitting on the coach taking it easy. (not to mention untold numbers of sport families out for HS football). but an MLS Friday could work strictly because theres little competition on TV, especially sporting events.
more to the point, its only a matter of time before the increased exposure the PL is getting from NBC carries over to the MLS, at least a little. like someone else has posted, this is the first MLS season ive kept up with after the football season started, and its mainly because NBC has got me hooked on the sport. throw in some expanding markets, a few more big signings, and some extra juice from teams like NYCFC, all the pieces are there to at least get up above WNBA standards, hopefully closing the gap on the NHL.

Also doesn't help ratings when they show a game at the same time that other games take place. A lot of the potential viewers are at the stadium watching their own team and wouldn't be watching TV. Games on TV should be the only games taking place at that particular time.

MLS gets shite on by ESPN, and that kills its overall ratings. I'm not one to bitch and moan about ESPN, because I don't watch it outside of 30 for 30 and live games. However, it's the end-all-be-all of sports programming. If they promote and air a sporting event or league, then mouth-breathers think someone is forcing them to watch it.

MLS gets almost zero publicity from ESPN, despite the network holding the rights to its most meaningful matches. They also air their required one game a week during horrible TV slots. MLS is treated the same way ESPN treats bowling. Last year's final was played during the SEC Championship game (thus, shitty ratings). In the past it's been on a late November or early December Sunday night competing against the #1 primetime broadcast every week, Sunday Night Football.

i really like the product nbc is putting out. The epl matches blow the cl games on fox out the water. Just the feed and set up seem so much cleaner.
