Messi tarnished his image in this World Cup in my opinion

Guy is still a GOAT player, but his childish and pathetic behavior throughout the tournament was beyond embarrassing.
The whining on Cucurella touching his lips and then crying like a little baby after the match while watching his team act like utter thugs after the game and doing/saying nothing says a lot about his so called leadership.
Sad to see such a great player end it like that and tarnish his image. The worst part is it just confirmed who he actually is, because throughout his history people ignored this entitled behavior. Players are even speaking out how he would demand apologies for fouls even when they got all ball.
Guy is a true piece of work. That said, there doesn’t get much better skill-wise offensively ans we may never see anyone close to it.

I just don't like how he never tries to cool off his teammates, IMO it's poor leadership
He knows the entire team plays for him and their style enables his success so he allows it to continue and it worked for him.
This has been multiple tournaments so it's a trend

I was not pulling for him or Argentina.
At 39, after something like 1200 senior level appearances between club and country he earned the right to pick his spots of maximum effort.
His walking is strategic, like a lot of strikers hanging out offsides and checking back in just before the pass, it’s creates a false sense of security for the defenders, there’s a lot nuance to it people don’t understand.

Ehh he’s the prime example of why your best player doesn’t have to be your captain
He’s super introverted and for the most part avoids confrontation.

I'm pretty indifferent on messi though i loathe the teams he has played for, other than Miami because who cares. That said dude raising his hand like a child tattling in class was beyond pathetic even for an Argentine

This isn’t about effort. It’s his lack of leadership and consistent whining to the officials. He is notorious and demonstrated as such for complaining about every little thing. He looks at every player after a foul as in “how dare you touch me?”
It’s pathetic. Does that detract from his greatness as a technical player? No, of course not. It just shows shitty leadership as does not showing up for the post much obligated interviews. Same team would have lost their shite in Spain had they done the same.
People on here attack numerous players for exactly that, but it’s Messi, so that makes it okay.

I think you’re putting a little too much emphasis on the arm band. Latin American teams play that way why would he be any different? As a younger player, he played through contact way more than he does today, but the way they officiate the game is completely different. If you stay up and lose the ball 0% chance you get the call, fall and complain is a 50/50.

None of my posts ever said Messi sucks and this is why his fanboys can’t seem to fathom he can be criticized and is in fact not perfect.
Saying he plays literally almost zero defense and is a one dimensional (offensive) player isn’t saying he sucks. It’s admitting what he is. A one-way player who now puts in no effort on defense.

Either enforce the rules like you are supposed to or don’t host the tournament. There is no point in allowing teams to force you to not call fouls, not give cards, and avoiding ejections because they force your hand.
Fouls are fouls. That’s no soccer and he’ll, it’s not even rugby at that point. It’s just dirty play after dirty play. Running and intentionally should ont players while they are in mid air like Argentina did multiple times to Spain in the final alone with nearly none of them called is absurd. Paredes should have been ejecting 4 times.
There could easily have been 4 players from Argentina red carded in the final and they only had one during the game.

I'm not a Messi fanboy, I was pulling for Cape Verde, Mo Sallah and Egypt, England, and Spain in the knockouts (wanted to see Colombia instead of Switzerland), but I do have an appreciation for what he's done, and what he still is.
Go look back at my posts since the start of June, I've been adamant that this new ultra physical style of play is bullshite and taking away from how the game should be played. It's even more frustrating when it's not enforced at the youth level, and you know it's being taught by opposing youth level coaches, all before they're even playing 11v11. It falls on the officials, when getting pushed with two hands on your back knocks you out of position it should be a foul. Trying to get flopping and diving out of the game has actually made it a necessity to hit the ground with the way it's being officiated today. There is no reward for fighting through contact and losing the ball in the process, you just lost the ball.
Of the 104 games played in this World Cup, I bet I watched 75, most of those missed being in the last round of the group stage when they were playing at the same time. It's not just Messi and Argentina or just the Latin American countries, though they are definitely the worst about it, European and African countries are all moving to this style of play, but they don't rely on it nearly as much. Argentina winning back to back with their style of play would have had a net negative impact on the future of soccer globally, compared to the net positive of Spain winning with their style of play.
