CHICAGO (Dec. 12, 2013) – The U.S. Soccer Federation and Jurgen Klinsmann have agreed to a four-year contract extension that will keep the former World Cup champion in his role as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team through 2018. As part of the new deal, Klinsmann also becomes the Technical Director for U.S. Soccer. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Obviously I don't know any specifics beyond what the media is reporting, he was given carte blanche heading into Brazil. At least that's how I look at it, and I think most others would as well.
There are all kinds of guys I'd be open to coaching the USMNT if/when Klinsmann leaves from Jason Kreis to Roberto Martinez. I'd be nervous to give it to a first timer like Reyna or Ramos, even though lots of countries give the jobs to their former stars, without much experience (Klinsmann, Hagi, Van Basten, etc).

What qualification games did Landon play in this cycle? Was he there for his teammates? For his country?
He has played in 5/16 World Cup qualifiers.
Where was Timmy Chandler who turned down call-ups? It is not all of the guys were there. While some may be due to age like Green and Yedlin, we do not have to take the ones that got us to the World Cup. Jurgen should just select the best 23, and he did not do that..

Its hilarious. We just beat Ghana for the first time, are 1-0 3 pts in group in the world cup after 1 game for the first time in a long time and you all are hating on the man because Landon made his own bed and reaped the repercussions.
I am ecstatic about the three points, but it is not like we played a great game. It was fantastic we could win in the World Cup against a quality opponent with Bradley stinking up the place, Jozy having to leave after 20 minutes, and our players cramping and tiring up like crazy. The result was perfect, but there is certainly room to question the process, especially when Jurgen is so high on fitness.
quote:
Hell, we could make the semis and you two would be here calling for Jurgens head because "we would have won it all if we had Landon"
Landon may or may not have made a difference in Brazil. However, it was moronic to leave him off because I sure as frick know Davis, Yedlin, Green, etc. will not be impacting the games.
I hope Jurgen becomes our technical director or moves out of US soccer regardless of the result. I do not want him as the coach. There is nothing wrong with hating the coach.
I just fail to see any logical argument to leave him off. It is infuriating as a fan of both the player and especially the USMNT to not bring the best we can offer to Brazil. It fricking sucks.

We played like shite and won. It's better to be lucky than good, but it wasn't through tactical wizardry that we won the game. And believe me, as a guy who went through the 2002 World Cup with the idiotic decisions of Senol Gunes daily, I know when people succeed despite themselves (and I wouldn't say that about Klinsmann in the Ghana game, by the way).
And when it comes to Donovan, he isn't some idol of mine. I appreciate the guy for all he did for the USMNT. I probably appreciate him more than other American players right now because he's been doing it for longer, but I would feel equally as strong in disliking a manager who left off Jozy, Fabian, Dempsey, Bradley, or Howard. It's not a Landon Donovan issue. It's a leaving off one of our top 8 players issue. As I said earlier, I view this has our best shot since 2002 and I don't think 2018 will be better. Watching this team over the summer and into the final qualifying game, I had a feeling we could make a semifinal run with some breaks.
The draw was the first blow. The shitastic roster Klinsmann called in was the second. It's probably my most frustrating moment as a sports fan in more than two decades.
ETA: Let's add Cameron to the list, too. Jozy, Fabian, Dempsey, Bradley, Howard, Cameron, or Donovan. I will straight up say that barring some sort of Harkes/Wynalda situation, no one who sincerely has the best interest of US Soccer in mind would call up 23 players and not include these men.
2nd ETA: I haven't upvoted or downvoted a single post.

Anything saying landon should not be here is a thumbs down, and basically whatever you say is a thumbs up. I was hoping this wouldn't be a problem for the cup, but we're remarkably thin offensively without Jozy

I know Jurgen had the everyone has to earn their spot policy, which is fine and dandy, but I really thought about a third of their guys should be have been handed plane tickets no questions asked.
Auto to Brazil:
Donovan
Bradley
Howard
Deuce
Fabian
Cameron
Jozy
Guzan
Jones
99% they should go and I would be disappointed if they missed out:
Johannsson
Beckerman
Zusi
Bedoya
Besler
Rimando
Mix
I felt these like 16 spots should have been virtual locks, and I would have been butthurt if someone in the first tier missed (especially my favorite player) and fairly shocked if someone in the second tier did.
The last seven spots should have gone to a combo of (you can have your preferences here, but these are mine):
Wondo
Boyd
Evans
Omar
Chandler
Beasley
Brooks
I may have went too heavily defensively. I guess one of my defenders out for a midfielder, but I have no idea who I would pick.

How many have won the opening match of a World Cup?
And that Portugal team was one of the favorites to win the 2002 World Cup.
Interestingly, that match followed some of the same script - score early, hang on for dear life.
Again, I'm not going to circle jerk this to death. I've seen people trot out the "best year in US Soccer history" line - guess who played a big part in that year. I've seen the "Landon only played in XX qualifiers." That wasn't (entirely) Landon's choice.
Anyway, people are (shocklingly) conditioned to believe that everything in this country is either/or. You're either a communist or a klansman, it's all either #TeamJurgen or #TeamLandon.
I am able to separate Jurgen's "achievements" from his decisions and judge both accordingly - and still support the team with all of my heart.
I'd still be this pissed if he left off anyone that I thought was vital to our success in a World Cup.
In the same manner, I can still cheer for LSU, appreciate Coach Miles' achievements, and think he's a monumental dumbass for sticking with Jordan Jefferson for as long as he did - and I can still believe that choice cost LSU a title.

And wasn't it reported that Donovan was basically subverting Klinnsmann, openly arguing with him and keeping others from buying in? At a time when drastic change was being introduced by a foreign coach, drastic change at ALL levels of US soccer, the one guy who could either help usher that change in or destroy it decided to try to destroy it. So Klinnsmann got rid of him. It was a long time coming and I wasn't surprised at all.

I think some of you fall for the fallacy that we must bring the best 23. Thats not the case.
Klinsman must bring the 23 that gives him, what he believes to be, the best chance of getting out of our group.
That means making decisions on an individual basis - he doesn't just get to just rank players 1-23 and bring them.
He's got to bring a Chandler because we know Evans would not be able to deal with Ronaldo, Nani, Ghana's wingers, and Germany's offense. So the argument that he should be compared to Donovan at all based upon both of their lack of qualifying matches is stupid at best.
I believe he looked at Donovan, looked at his current form and fitness. Looked at how he meshed with the team. Looked at how positive he would be on the bench (since clearly he was thinking he wouldn't start). Looking at the distraction he may be. Looking at the way some of our team seems to sit back and wait for him to come to the rescue. And I believe Jurgen said to himself -
"@#$ it, Donovan sitting on the bench could work great or be a distraction. But if I leave him off and play it right internally, it may give a certain confidence and instill some determination to take the offense upon themselves in the remaining guys."
I don't think Donovan was left off for his ability or fitness, I believe he was left off because he wasn't going to be a starter and Jurgen thinks it would make us a stronger team to not bring him as a sub.
Now, on an individual game or moment basis, maybe thats the wrong idea. Would have been great to have Donovan come in for Jozy the other day. But that doesn't mean there haven't been other benefits that we're not able to see.

What purpose does bitching about this now serve? Is it so if we fail to advance yall will have a scapegoat? I have to think that has at least a little to do with it. Many of you also act like you are personally offended that LD didn't make the squad, which I think is pretty odd. Admittedly, I've never been a Landon fanboy. I appreciate what he's done over the years but for whatever reason, he doesn't crack my top 10 favorite USMNT players of all time. All in all, I'd rather have him on the bench, but we don't. Big fricking deal. I don't think advancing or not was ever going to come down to having Landon or not.

They take the youngsters to get them exposed, so they will be ready in 2018, and less wide-eyed.

This is the worst line of thinking possible. You play for this World Cup and nothing else.

There is not a team at the World Cup that will play all of their players unless he game is irrelevant.
