In terms of drama yes but it isn't better than 2006. VAR had its moments and the shootouts have been tense. But I'd say it's probably been the 2nd or 3rd best WC I've seen outta the last 5.

there hasnt been the crazy goals like in '14.

Van Persie's header. James insane turning volley. Cahill's over-the-shoulder golazo.

lots of set piece goals and own goals in russia. the two most memorable goals have been screamers by right backs.

on the whole, i think '14 brazil has been better than this WC, but thats also because of the US games and ESPN's coverage, which had me watching soccer or soccer shows all day for a month.

No way. '98 and '06 were way better and the group stage matches in 2014 puts it ahead as well.

I was unaware that person claims to be a Croat, makes sense if that’s the case.

It’s been phenomenal. There have only a few shite games (the meaningless France-Denmark fixture was the worst, and I believe that’s the only 0-0 match). People are saying it’s the best simply due to the excitement of the games itself. There have been a record number of goals in the dying minutes (I saw an infographic showing all the last minute goals and it blew away the other WC). Think about some of the great matches like the 3-3 Spain-Portugal opener, Belgium’s comeback over Japan, etc. I heard the only other one in contention would be France 1998.

yep. the games have been so spectacular that it can be the "best world cup ever" without the USA or Italy being in it.

you have to consider neutrals whenever you think about how exciting a world cup is and how much fun you had watching the games your team wasnt in.

this world cup was a clinic in why the underdog is always alive and how they dont have to sit back in their own half to do so.

the sheer amount of 85+ minute game winners defies logic

rebic over his shoulder was pretty nice, as well as the modric goal in that same game.

those RB goals you mentioned would be top 5 goals in any world cup as well.

van persie header was epic, but on the whole there have been way more goals this world cup and much better overall play rather than the best teams scoring epic goals while everyone else struggles to put up anything

no way you already forgot about the cheryshev equalizer from the other day. that was a rocket

ya, but come on. We'll all see a few similar goals this season. those three i mentioned are iconic.

this WC has been great, but 7-1, no era penal, England sucking, i guess i just liked it more.

In general, there has been few players willing to take games on and risk making mistakes

I don’t mean this in a critical way, but the best teams in this tournament are lacking mature, proven, established players that add something to the tournament IMO.
Where’s the Xavi, Pirlo, Zidane, Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Ronaldo, etc?

Maybe Modric is the closest to that?

Yeah Modric has been great. Kante has been great. Pogba was really good today, especially defending. So yeah it lacks star power, but even in the group stages it lack that little bit of precision. Mbappe did so well in today's game though.

This has been a great cup.

2002 was my favorite of all time, but it didn't have as many marquee match-ups, and I am obviously biased as hell since my two favorite teams were the dark horses of the tournament.

Honestly, every Cup since 1994 has been really good. Euro 2004 is probably the only dud tournament among the Euros, WCs, and the Copa Centenario.

t is not. There have been some exciting games, but I genuinely think the play was much better last time

I generally agree with this.

I think the officiating has allowed a lot of physical play that has created a more even playing field for teams with less talent, which has kept goals from being scored in open play.

Overall I’ve had a lot of fun though, and I love the final 4 teams (now 3) and I’ll be genuinely happy for whoever ends up winning it.....but it’s coming home.

Yeah, many awkward incidents make this world cup best world cup ever.

Hopefully, WC is in France.

Ironically, what everyone was expecting to be the best game, France v Belgium, turned out to be a dud.

World Cup 1998 was the best to me...

A Dutch Golden Generation(Kluivert, Bergkamp, Davids, Seedorf, Overmars, The De Boers, Van Der Saar, etc..)
The birth of a Superstar and Super team(Zidane & France)
A Croatian sensation(Suker)
An underachieving superstar and team(Ronaldo & Brazil)
An English wonderkid & villian(Owen & Beckham)

It was awesome

Personally I liked the 2014 World Cup better. I think that's the best. This one sure has been fantastic though.

In 2014, the poetic justice of Brazil losing the way that they did still gives me boners to this day.

I've probably watched the full 20 minute highlights with BBC commentating like 15 times in the last four years. one of the greatest days of my soccer life
