Seems this is the second world cup in a row where very questionable calls have cost the US a trip to the knockout stage. Is this coincidence or is officiating always this bad in soccer?

Soccer officiating can just be really inconsistent and subjective. Even moreso in the World Cup I think.

Did I miss something? When did the US get eliminated from contention?

there is a general bias toward the US in general, not just in soccer

the same official is the one who gave the yellow card to the US player for a handball when it hit his face, no? I could have seen that penalty wrong because i was watching on a espn3 feed with no sound at work. Just seems like 2 horrible calls that cost us a great goal chance and a sure goal. Seems a little more than coincidence.

If the statement about the call contains the phrase "honest mistake", it was deliberate on the ref's part.

no, but if we do miss it you can go back to this call today. I could have worded it better.

Three straight Cups. Anyone remember the handball in the Germany game is 2002?

There's no conspiracy, we've just been very, VERY unlucky with refs.

Sorry Baloo.
I've been watching this team for 20 years.
If it's not a conspiracy, it's a general dislike of the United States, manifesting itself in biased officiating. And a corollary to it is players from other nations KNOWING they'll likely get a favorable call in ANY ambiguous situation.

From Wynalda's outburst in the first match of 1990 against Czechoslovakia, to the situation in 2002, to the Confederations Cup last year with the soft red cards, to red cards and such in qualifying every time we go on the road in CONCACAF, to this morning.

Unlucky? No. Conspiracy, too structured, no. Definite bias and typical anti-Americanism from the rest of the world.

No shite, Tyler.
It's not an active conspiracy with meetings and plans. It's just a simple case of everyone having the same values and beliefs (much like U.S. mainstream media, where most come out of Columbia School of Journalism...etc.)

I'm trying not to be English and emulate their constant bitching about officiating.

But this was one of the worst officiated games I have ever seen (Italy-US 2006 is my gold standard - no one can convince me that game wasn't crooked). I think the US was whistled for a phantom foul in the box three or four times. Every time we had a chance in the box, the ref blew the whistle.

I understand, mate, and I'm not that far off. But I get frustrated and I have no one knowledgeable amongst my close friends, so I bitch on here more than I should, as well.
