Kevin Durant would probably dominate if he was a pro soccer player. I think he used to play in high school and was pretty good.

But if the best athletes in the US played soccer we would dominate. Why is that even a question? Look at the world cup. Most of those teams... that's their best athletes.. Not the US. Out athletes are playing better sports. But if I were to build a US soccer team using US athletes, I would go after a lineman that played football at a major university to be my goalie. Obviously takes up more space and athletic. Then I would get two power forwards and convert them into soccer players.. Then someone like Tyreek Hill who is fast as shite. Then a tight end type player, then I would get the best soccer players to fill out the starting lineup and roster.. And we would be bullies.

It’s less that we don’t take it seriously and more that it’s not our everything. American kids grown up wanting to play baseball, or basketball, or football. We spread our time and attention between all of them.

In much of the world, kids grow up wanting to be footballers, full stop. It’s what every kid in the neighborhood plays for fun. And if you’re an elite athlete, there’s no question what you play.

It’s just different.

A top tier child athlete in the US would almost always choose soccer last out of football, baseball, basketball, and track & field.

We don’t have the academy system, the high school/college game doesn’t compete with international development programs, and we have zero soccer culture or coaching talent.

The US women's team is quite dominant I think it does bear considering that women don't have real monetary options when it comes to professional sports, whereas men do. But, there are enough male athletes "leftover" in the US that should be able to field a top soccer team, along with filling the NFL, NBA, etc with all the players they need.
One could also mention we don't have any good tennis players anymore , either.
I think it's a total culture that starts with very young children. Certainly, the men's teams have improved on the world stage lately, so we are heading in the right direction..

Imagine if every defensive back and wideout in the NFL grew up playing only soccer. We would dominate.

Would high stepping down the field and dancing after a goal draw a yellow card?
