In that scenario North and Central America get crushed. Absolutely obliterated outside the Mexicans and the US and even then it'll be hit or miss. Maybe a separate tournament with the top 4 teams from each federation at a later point.

In the 2016 copa centenario tournament the US made the semifinals but were destroyed by Argentina 4-0. Chile who ended up winning it beat Mexico 7-0 in the quarters. It's not like the concacaf had a bad showing in it other than those two matches. Chile and Argentina were the finalists.

That's not different than all the little counties in the Euros, but they still play in the tournament.

We wouldn't be able to guarantee that we could bring our best players unless we could get special permission from FIFA.

Keeping them separate and the USA playing in both is the best solutions that both parties will want. Just adding USA and Mexico does so much to improve Copa America.
I like it. Sure the Euros will steal the headlines, but it was fun putting the Colombia game on last night just two hours after England wrapped up. Felt like World Cup action.

This seems like the best solution. It would be rough at times but being full time in Copa would only benefit our Men’s team.

We did both back in 2007 and sent a C-team to Copa America. Didn't end well.
Granted that was at a time where because we won the Gold Cup that year, we qualified for Confederations Cup, which doesn't exist anymore. So I would guess if we ever did both in the same year again, we'd make the Copa America the priority.

What if it’s a schedule of:
Word Cup
Reset Year and Copa America Qualification
Copa America (expanded version)
Gold Cup
World Cup
Can swap Gold Cup and Copa America if it makes sense. Think we are talking a 32 team tourney with all 10 South American teams and 22 from Concacaf.
8 groups of 4 with the top 2 getting out. 8 different cities host a group and then 4 cities host the knockouts and quarters. Then 1 city hosts the semis and title.

Copa America (expanded version)
Gold Cup
World Cup
Can swap Gold Cup and Copa America if it makes sense. Think we are talking a 32 team tourney with all 10 South American teams and 22 from Concacaf.

The issue is that there is no rhyme or reason to the Copa America schedule anymore. They've had tournaments every four years, three years, two years and even had it on back to back years once.

That's way too many CONCACAF teams. The Gold Cup doesn't even have that many CONCACAF teams. We would have teams like Bermuda getting dick whipped by Brazil.
No one wants that.
The best way to do it would be 10 CONMEBOL and 6 CONCACAF for 4 groups of 4. Or 10 CONMEBOL, 4 CONCACAF and 2 invited teams from other confederations.

They play the Copa every two years. Why not just have an all South American Copa and a combined CONCACAF/CONMEBOL Copa every four years? Plus the CONCACAF teams can play the Gold Cup during the years the all South American Copa is going on. Win-win for everybody.

Not really.
Since 2001 it has been:
2001, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021, and the next one is scheduled for 2024.

I believe the current plan is to do it every 4 years in alignment with the Euros.

I would assume if we wanted into Copa we would make that the priority, hence the switch.

U.S., Mexico, and Canada automatically go to Copa and the top three other CONCACAF teams join them. Everyone else plays Gold Cup
