I think we can make an argument that Tomiyasu's injury is as important to the team as Saliba's.

Obviously Saliba is the rock of the defense and contributes in big ways to build up play.

That said, it's clear Tomiyasu is also the 2nd choice LB (over Tierney), RB, and RCB and arguably LCB over Kiwior. He had a rough season but he would spell Ben White every game and he would 100% more likely play the Saliba role better than Holding.

Tomiyasu is a great 5th defender. Sucks that his season got destroyed by injury

Thinking more, this is just on Arteta. He's still a novice. He's made terrible decisions. The team is too high and too low at times.
While I agree he’s made some questionable decisions I think that is pretty harsh considering we are still ahead of the best team in the world (yes I know we expect them to pass us but still). We can’t be too critical without realizing what an amazing season it has been and a lot of that is due to him.

Arteta is young too. He is learning and getting better just like everyone. Just wish he wasn’t learning against cheat code City. Because if not, we’d win a title not at the pinnacle of what he is creating.

So much for the narrative “Glad we got knocked out of Europa! City will be too involved with CL!”

We would be screwed if we were still in Europa with the lack of depth in the back.

We barely had the depth when everyone was healthy to operate on two fronts, now we barely have the quality depth to finish out the season.

I didn’t like going out how/when we did, but now I’m glad we did given both Saliba and Tomi are out.

Ok, I agree with everyone post. We have to remember we are very very very young, (very talented but the youngest team by far) including at manager. Some basics:

1) We really never expected to be this good so quick into the rebuild, the player acquisition has really been incredible and the only thing that has kept this team from being nine or 10 points or more ahead of man city in the championship over is the lack of depth. Let me repeat that and let it sink into everybody. The only reason that we are not already basically the champions of this league right now is that we didn’t have enough depth to make it through, so we had to cross our fingers and hope that the injury bug didnt bite us on the arse which now and obviously has. Injuries are variable, just like luck that are often out of the control of your manager or ownership, and even your player sometimes all that you can do is to have quality back ups the number of teams that would’ve been champions, but for some freak, injury or weird such weird injury is probably significant in this occurs in almost every sport not just soccer. So as fans we can’t be super critical of a manager or a team right now when clearly, they were playing out their best players, and did everything they could to build as much quality back up as possible but let’s be honest we all know that takes a few years to do. The important thing is now Personal is a Club that players want to come to not what they want to get away from. The future is bright.

2) Now let me put on my dumbass critical fan hat.

A) We have suddenly given up 7 goals in 3 games to 3 teams without great offenses. We will give up that or more to MC if they play like this. This is horrific.

B) Of These goals I honestly think Rob Holding is responsible for most of them, 3 of them for sure. If Rob Holding starts against MC I am throwing my damn drink at the TV. (Rob’s mom, I love your son btw. He is just a back up right now and this isn’t his fault he is forced in a starting role. I hate his play right now but not him as a player or person. He isn’t ready to play lots of minutes at this level. )

3) Did ESR die or something? Our offense needs a spark and he needs to start coming off the bench, instead of Jesus creating a two headed monster with Saka all that’s happened is that Saka is just much less involved, we really didn’t get any extra offense at all. It’s addition by subtraction basically.

4) Ben white has been great most all season. Our captain is brilliant, and perfect person for the job, troussard maybe the best damn pick up in the league, and the Ukrainian is right there too but a bit of liability in defense. XChaka the barbarian has played great most all year and not cost us a single game as in a loss. Ramsdale probably was up for goaltender of year before this skid.

Please feel free to add on Or correct me where I am off

Trossard needs to start on Wednesday. We can set up defensively more with Xhaka and Partey in the middle.

But we have to try and boat race them with our attack and counter-attacking ability.

Only way we win is by scoring a ton of goals on Wednesday. Everyone start saying prayers now.

If we lose to City that is not where the title was lost. It was lost when we dropped points against the bottom half of the table. The frustration of these games will not get in the way, at least for me, of what is happening at the club. The Arsenal of the past 10 years would be 10th in this league today. This year is educating and giving the experience this youthful side needs for the future.

Going up 2-0 and ending in a draw in consecutive games will be the reason we lose the league, if we do lose it

It certainly did not help but drawing Southampton twice and losing to Everton kept us from pulling away and left City in the race. Wins vs West Ham and Southampton recently would have put it out of reach.

Thoughts, prayers......and a miracle. If Holding plays at all, it's done. Our formation/tactics will have to win this game.

During the match with Bournemouth he came off the bench for Trossard before leaving due to injury. Supposedly Arteta could've played him against Southampton, but didn't. There's something going on with him and it's concerning.

Well, it’s here. 100 pages in and today is the day we either win the league or are finally put out of our misery. With our form and their form lately, fully expecting the latter, but even a draw would give hope! That would mean a point back (assuming City wins their two games in hand) with only the trip to Newcastle left as a stumbling block. Still, I think I need to recalibrate to being happy we finished second instead of disappointed we didn’t finish first. Just a bridge too far for this group.

I’m just not expecting anything given the last two results. Crazier things have happened. I do think Arteta needs to be more pragmatic to pull a result today, just not sure if he has it in him.
