Your mind will wrap itself in knots if you ponder the term 'African American'

We just finished Black History Month, a celebration of black culture.
But we aren't supposed to judge people by skin color so we say African American. This would mean 'Black History Month' is offensive?

But that only applies to people with colored skin, so white immigrants from Africa can't use the term.

But it does apply to people of color outside of the US, hence phrases like African American Briton. Has there ever been an African American African listed in a story?

Best not to think about this too much I guess.

What are you talking about? Black is an appropriate and acceptable term.

Well apparently not, since you spent a lot of time on it, and still made this confusing thread.

The part I can't wrap my mind around is pick an African country, just about any one of them.

Now picture the opportunities blacks have here vs. that country. There's no comparison.

Blacks are STILL enduring oppression in the mother land they claim to be so proud of that they went thru here 200 years ago. And it's at the hands of other blacks.

It boggles the mind.

Perhaps you should be more observant of the world around you. Why do we even have the AA term?

In fact, when someone calls themself 'African American' I would challenge you to counter with 'black' and see what happens.

What is hard for you to understand? I challenge you to explain the logic of the label to the rest of us.

I think African American will eventually die out. Most black people in my experience don't like the term at all and prefer to be called black.

In fact a had a conversation about children's names with a black colleague yesterday. She had a very common name, and she said people often didn't realize she was BLACK based on her name.

I will tell her that weagle99 says she's not using the acceptable term for her own race.

Why would I counter it? Both are appropriate and acceptable.

I remember when the Deluxe box of Crayola contained a color labeled 'flesh.'

Why can't they?

You're making up rules that you think exist but don't.

You can also ponder why it is acceptable for them to call each other the N word as a term of endearment. And we know how the rest of the story goes......

I said that to a Boer friend and he chuckled in his garbage Dutch language.

Which is weird because black people aren't black.

Charlize Theron was born in Africa but lives in Los Angeles. Is she an African American? If she is not, then the term is meaningless and we should just say 'black'.

It's even more absurd than that. Africa is a continent. Libya is on that continent. Are Americans with Libyan heritage "African Americans"?.. Egyptians?.. white South Africans, etc.

I've got a friend from South Africa. He's a honkey. I can't wait to start calling him African American. I can't believe I never though of this.

Your comment reminds me of a interview I saw during he ATL Olympics. SJW type taking offense to the term "Black South African". Reporter asks what they should be called. SJW says "African American South African". Reporter says "they aren't American"....stunned silence. I've looked for that interview on the interwebs for years.

I kinda like the term 'African-American.' It reminds us that :

1. We are all American,
2. But we have different heritages.

So while there is African-American, there is also Irish-American, Chinese-American, Swedish-American etc.

Yes, there are some corner cases where this is confusing, but that is language for you.
