You couldn't be more wrong. Immigration is one of our core economic advantages. We need immigrants to make up for a declining birth rate and a rising median age.

Great, so sounds like we can cut our immigration from Africa by at least 57%.

Was that the reason for immigration for the majority of the Haitian and El Salvadorian immigrants that came over? I think the programs for compassionate immigration and the volume of illegal immigration is what a portion of the country objects to. Not the educated legal immigrants. I'll leave the J1 immigrants out of it, as that is a different problem.

Fair point

Agreed. I actually know alot immigrants from "shithole" African countries working and excelling in STEM careers.

Trump very clearly insinuated that people who live in shithole countries are less worthy of becoming Americans than people from other places.

Well....yeah? "MERIT-based immigration". What skills do the shitholers bring? How will they assimilate to our society? Will their skills be a net positive or a net drain on our country?

We've got enough trouble taking care of the people who are already here. If we're going to open our doors to outsiders, should we not have some level of say so in evaluating why they deserve to be here?

Perhaps most surprising is that, by many measures, the most-educated immigrant group in the U.S. isn't East Asians. It’s Africans.

According to Census data, more than 43 percent of African immigrants hold a bachelor’s degree or higher -- slightly more than immigrants from East Asia. Nigerian immigrants are especially educated, with almost two-thirds holding college degrees -- a significantly higher percentage even than Chinese or South Korean immigrants. African immigrants are also very likely to hold advanced degrees, many of which are earned at U.S. universities. By many measures, African immigrants are as far ahead of American whites in the educational achievement as whites are ahead of African-Americans.
I said marketable skills. I didn't mention how many degrees they have. My son in law is working on a PhD in history from a mid tier university. Even when he graduates he will still have no marketable skills.

The article you linked doesn't mention what the Nigerian degrees are in. So what are they in? What marketable skills do they have? And fwiw, I have known some Nigerian immigrants and they are great. Hard working, industrious, grateful to be in America.

The upsetting thing is that Trump very clearly insinuated that people who live in shithole countries are less worthy of becoming Americans than people from other places. Even if you strip away the possible (likely?) racist angle, you are still left with what is clearly class-based discrimination, and IMO that isn't the way the land of opportunity should present itself to the world
he 100% right though. We should be taking people from Norway instead of fricking Central America/Haiti/African shitholes. Let's see, what makes our country stronger and better, well educated, hard working, law-abiding Norwegian with some kind of useful specialty or skill, or uneducated, poverty-stricken, Salvadoran who is either going to come and get in social services or is a ms-13 member? This should not be a controversial position

I'll save you the trouble. They're all overwhelmingly white homogeneous populations.

... and before you fire back with "Muh white people!" the key there is homogeneous.

You can't see the real underlying issue here, and because of that, you are a moron.

We should probably just kick you out and replace you with an educated Nigerian.
