It wasn't an attack on Shepard because he was gay. In fact, if I remember right, one of the attackers was a (current or former) lover. The attack itself was about drugs/money.

This bullshite started long before Shepard. Harvey Milk is portrayed as a martyr who was killed because he was gay. Yet I'm willing to bet that most LGBTs today who hold that position have no fricking clue who George Moscone was.
Milk was shot and killed by Dan White AFTER he murdered Moscone because Moscone wouldn't appoint him back to the Board of Supervisors after he resigned. Milk also opposed White's reappointment. His murder had nothing to do with his being gay.
