Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson says "'Be very careful' where you travel"

U.S. citizens should “be very careful” when traveling around the world due to the risk of arbitrary arrests by hostile governments, a Republican senator warned days after Russia detained a U.S. citizen.

“I think people do need to be very careful and weigh carefully when they travel to these countries that are not exactly our friends,” Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, a senior member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told the Washington Examiner.

The second-term senator offered that warning days after Russian officials arrested a Michigan native on charges of espionage. The former Marine’s detention punctuated a string of high-profile incidents of American and Canadian citizens held overseas, including a series of cases that provoked a State Department travel warning for China.

I wouldn't necessarily travel to Turkey, or Egypt, or Saudi Arabia right now,” Johnson, who chairs the Foreign Relations subcommittee for Europe, told the Washington Examiner. “If I was just a private citizen, there are a host of places I would not go, and unfortunately Russia and China are two on that list right now.

But what would he say if his own children wanted to visit Moscow, Beijing, or Istanbul? “Go to Hawaii."

I can't imagine why anyone would want to go to Turkey, ever.

That is silly. Parts of Turkey are incredible. Istanbul is still one of the world's great cities, and the western and southern coasts are quintessential Mediterranean.

They just have a ugly demagogue and a fairly corrupt government backing him up right now. It's still the 6th-most visited country in the world.

It's still safer for an American tourist than Mexico or most of the Caribbean right now.

"Don't travel to Turkey or Eygpt."

I did not need to be told that.

Trump is making enemies with deep state countries... except for the ones like North Korea which he has fixed/converted.

Soon there won't be many deep state countries and all will be good!

Sorry to ruin your day.

Turkey is complicated. The coastal areas are more modern, and more European. The interior is far more conservative.

The Turks are a generally straight forward people though, they say and do what they mean.

With as many Jihadists as they have these days, and with as many refugees as they’ve absorbed. I would absolutely be careful though.

The physical danger would come from Arabs though, and not Turks.

Unless you’ve come there to preach, in which case that will get you thrown in prison now.

Russia, I wouldn’t worry about. Border control is actually somewhat serious, which was a first for me. They will ask you questions. Russians are a friendly people though, and they’ll go out if their way to make you comfortable.

They’re serious, sad, and warm. Also generous.

Saudi Arabia, don’t break the law. It can get you killed. And be careful who you’re friends with. When important people get arrested, so does their patronage network. The Kingdom is a truly medieval place, with a thin, modern, facade.

Egypt, if you get kidnapped, pray that the Egyptians don’t rescue you. Odds are, they’ll go in, guns blazing, and kill everyone.

I understand this from a current political/safety standpoint. But Constantinopolis is one of the founding cities of all of civilization. It is a truly amazing place. I spent the summer of 1999 in Greece, and took a 4-day sojourn there. It was an amazing amazing city.

I wish it weren't so dangerous to go there now.
