Why should the government bail out an airline?

They do it repeatedly
Apparently the executives at Spirit didnt bribe the right senators and congresspeople. The big airlines know who and how much to pay.

Simple fact! They have a business model which is guaranteed to fail. They cater to the uber-cheap airfare. Razor thin profit margin. Fuel prices increase for more than two weeks and you die!

Trump knew you’d complain if he bailed them out, but here we are still complaining.

I just checked their stock price. It's $1 per share.

Because riding a Greyhound bus is a classier experience than flying on Spirit Airlines.

I didn't really want to be part owner of a crappy company with shitty management.

Unlike the legacy airlines (Delta, American, United & Alaskan), Spirit isn’t a bank.
Once an airlines gets tied into the banking system with air miles, it’s essentially a national bank. Which we all know how that goes.

America's Airline? Is that what they called themselves?
Reminds me of Hustler back in the day, calling it America's Magazine.

Bailed out how? They already were swimming in debt so more loans were not going to help. Also one has to realize they were not a threat to the execution of our economy.
Realize all those butts in the seats of Spirit are just going to be sitting in a plane with another name on it. Somebody is going to make that income and hence the economy keeps on ticking.

Capitalism allows business failures.....bailing out bad companies are against the ideology.
WE can do without Spirit.....although prices will go up!

Spirit Airlines going out of business is what it is, but here is what no one is talking about: who ultimately made the decision and pressed the button to liquidate?
Spirit’s creditors were negotiating terms for a bailout which would have included the US government taking warrants for 90% equity ownership of the business in exchange for a $500 million cash infusion. The distressed debt investors, looking to preserve investment losses, thought they had the upper hand at the table and chose to hold out for more value and counter the proposal. In response, Trump said no thanks and walked away.
While the Biden administration, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, and Lina Khan all had a hand to play in blocking a pro-free market merger with JetBlue in 2024, this negotiation dynamic and greed is what ultimately led to the death of Spirit Airlines.
Creditors and stakeholders in Spirit Airlines include Citadel, Ares, PIMCO, and Cyrus.
