re: Why should I care what happens to Taiwan?

If we frick around in that potential conflict, even some of the most mundane electrical devices will explode in price and be considered a luxury item.

Strategically important but folks the live there need to want to defend themselves.

Their military has an extremely difficult time filling their ranks.

Lots of truth here. Britain and France can be included in this as well IMO, although I think their direct involvement would be limited by their correspondingly lower capabilities. But boh nations have too many possessions in the Pacific to be totally uninvolved though.

Another interesting facet to any China-Taiwan/the West conflict is what it would likely do to the strategic situation between Pakistan and India, given the Quad arrangement and what China would have to do in the SCS. Presuming that Russia would support China, the recipe for a major war on n Asia is not hard to imagine.
