Why is Mississippi on the bottom of almost every single ranking by state?

Poverty, education, happiness, healthcare, etc... there is Mississippi at number 50.
I understand that this does not necessarily make the state "bad" or the people "miserable", but I DO wonder if these relatively poor showings have something to do with the state's unwillingness to invest in education, healthcare, etc.

I can think of a reason...

Maryland has them too, and here in California we have Mexicans coming in thousands over the fences each day. Doesn't seem to lower the rankings of those states. In fact, Maryland, while losing appeal due to democrats, is still very wealthy.

I've only lived in Mississippi a few years after an early life in Massachusetts and four years in Indiana and I'm happy as a lark to be here. Can't explain why the state fairs poorly but demographics probably plays a significant part in education statistics. If a state is perceived to be poorly educated then business is reluctant to locate there and a tax base fails to be manifested.

I just know I'm looking forward to moving out of Mississippi on Monday.

Because the rankings are deliberately skewed in order to try and make the south look bad, duh

Having the nations capitol in your backyard helps

Mississippi is filled with poor blacks and whites, has no major cities, really has no interesting cities. No mountains, decent beach, no major business interest, very little professional appeal.
Maryland is coastal and fed by DC folks. It also has Baltimore.
It's just really not that shocking. Also, Maryland is a shitty state that would be largely stagnant without DC, so I don't know if the "why can't you be more like Maryland" argument is that compelling.

Admittedly as a southerner I could find cities interesting to me. I'm talking about interesting enough to draw in a lot of revenue. While I'm sure Oxford does pretty well compared to other cities in the state at drawing in money, it's not enough to really lift the state, clearly.

Grew up on MS Coast here, and while I fully understand it isn't that great, it really is a whole lot worse when you move north. There is just nothing there to interest any one from out of state to ever move there.
Jackson might possibly be the worst capital city in the nation. It seems to me it exists merely because some dudes 200 years ago decided it should be the capital because it was in the middle of the state. That's it.

Because it is very, very poor.
And while it is becoming less poor, other states are doing even better so it can't gain much ground.
Basically the same as LA, though LA seems to be gaining ground.
West Virginia is another one in the same boat.

One of the first places I visited upon moving to the Mississippi gulf coast was Vicksburg and its historically interesting venues.
Jackson isn't the dead city many on this board make it out to be either.
