I had no idea vegetables were so expensive.
some definitely are more expensive than a $1 mcdouble and also grocery stores are few and far between in poverty stricken areas, while there are mcdonalds on every corner.

Of course some are but they provide more meals than 1 mcdouble.

when you take into consideration that it's one of the reddest states in the union?
The "redness" of Mississippi is a new phenomenon. It was a solidly democratic state from Reconstruction until the 80s. It's politics/spending was very Rooseveltian (as is its regulatory environment).

No clue. I do know that there are more attorneys per capita in MS than virtually any other state (or at least that used to be the case). Perhaps it relates to the tort system in addition to government regulation...a carry over if you will.
What DeltaDoc said. Trial lawyers own Mississippi. Lawsuits are filed there because lawyers know that juries side with the plaintiffs and bigtime.

I figured the redness of Mississippi had more to do with social and not fiscal issues. If the parties flipped on social issues, I guess MS would be a blue state.

Mississippi is not very fiscally conservative. Actually that trend is just now reversing...look at the primary election yesterday. But for a long time Mississippians loved them some federal pork

maryland only has 7 percent less

What is your hang up about Maryland? They will be at the bottom soon enough if you ahve watched their recent trajectory.

This is the answer, not just for MS
West Virginia is the 2nd poorest state in the nation by GDP per capita. They are 95% White, 3rd highest percentage in the nation. Maryland has the 4th highest percentage of black residents. They are 15th in GDP per capita. Demographics may tell part of the story, but it doesn't tell the whole story.

For a better comparison, Georgia has the 4th highest percentage of Black residents. Both are states in the deep south with a significant black population. The Georgia economy is significantly better off than Mississippi (27th).

You are correct, Delta, Coke, and AT&T help GA a great deal in that regard and are somthing MS needs to emulate more to be more successful. I would offer that the success of ATL was seeded before it became quite as multicultural as it is today.

Of course having one of the worlds busiest airport helps GA. If you lived in Mississippi ,you'd know what the problem was.

It is not as simple as demographics only but that tells the largest part of the story. In general the trend is self-fulfilling. A bigger question would be why do minorities stay in states where the perceived inequalities are so dramatic and economic advancement almost impossible.
