It isn't that they think it will work. Many progressives are "smart" (evil) enough to know it won't work, and also know that their current leaders are promoting communism in the long run.
The point is that in the NOW, it is getting at YOU. As the domestic enemy, this is more of a burden on your and your families, paychecks, jobs, etc. Look at the women celebrating the night Mimandi won, for example, and listen to their words. This is about revenge because they hate their fellow Americans more than anything in the world.

A little of the former, a lot of the latter.
Modern US History instruction is mainly that Europeans merely exploited and destroyed and the reason the USA is what it is is by sheer luck and the oppression of others - hence, things like the 1619 Project.
Thus, the West (and especially the USA) should feel guilty about its station and should be made to pay for its success - ergo, reparations - and further, should prostrate itself to the 3rd World (Popes Francis and Leo).

Some may think it will work, others are merely tired of watching our modern brand of capitalism tilt our nation toward monopoly, corporate control and war profiteering.

They aren’t actually trying socialism. It’s a misuse of labels, kind of like referring to MAGA as “conservative.” Hope that helps you understand.
