To have the freedom of ideas and current events without fear of reprisal to maintain an informed public. Monopolies and government tend to put a bind on this if given control of the press written or otherwise.

Free press is needed to kiss the arse of democrats, and provide them cover and protection so that the democrats never have to evolve their platform.

2018.. and identity politics is still going strong.

There's a difference between a free press and an honest press imo. We haven't seen much of the latter the last nine years, regretfully.

Even a democratically elected government is illegitimate if it required the power of state run propaganda to attain power. This is true because the process by which they achieved their outcome was artificially achieved by deceiving the voters when they placed their vote.

There's another logical conclusion from your premise - the press (corporations) is running the government, not the other way around.

Free speech/press in a democracy was meant in principle to allow citizens to get information from multiple sources/viewpoints that aren't controlled by government itself in order to form opinions and ideas freely.

IN a democracy the citizenry has direct input on how they are governed. To make informed decisions they must have information about the questions in issue. Without a Fourth Estate that is separate from the government they have little chance of getting unbiased information that could lead to a totalitarian government even though it might appear as a democracy.

The press is not free from the same types of corrupting powers though. Corporations via advertising have more control than they should, it is also subject to bias based on the people (and their education) that enter the field. When almost all the news becomes op-ed instead the citizens without an objective source and the validity of democracy is in peril. We live in an age where information is more accessible than ever before but almost devoid of (real) news. However, real news has been hard to come by, for various reasons, for the majority of this country's history so I think we will ultimately chart a path through this new wilderness. We are a representative republic which is designed to ameliorate the impact of ignorance of the citizenry and as frustrating as it may seem sometimes it is a concept that likely has been a large force in the fruitfulness of our nation.

The question should be what's the difference between a free republic and a democracy.

We don't have a free press. We have freedom of the press.

Allowing dissent creates a pressure release valve for those who can't agree and the press is supposedly that outlet.

A free press in a democracy is the window of the voters to see what elected officials are really doing. In order to accomplish this the press must be free to report on activities various illegal and/or unethical politician(s) may be up to, free from political reprisal from said politician(s). It's the voters' way of having some larger and more immediate level of accountability for elected officials.

The news business is a tough business because you rely on advertisers for funding and those advertisers hold a big stick as to what is published and what is not published. Politicians can hold businesses hostage if they are advertising in a news outlet that isn't favorable to them which people often don't realize. Those businesses put pressure on the editors or owners to quash story or they will move their advertising over to another medium.

The only other option is the news media funded not by advertisers but by private donors or foundations--the same ethical quandaries are present in those outlets too. Albeit the news media outlets funded strictly by public donations versus private donors/businesses due tend to have better stories and content IMO but a smaller number of eyeballs reading their stories.

Sad situation the press is in today in the US. It really sucks when I get better national or local news on foreign news outlets covering the US than I do by news outlets based in the US.

A free press is important so that the people can be better informed (and not only fed what those in power what you to know) to make better decisions at the ballot box. A press that is not free to tell the truth will result in ignorant decisions by voters and less accountability for elected officials as no one will call for resignations, impeachments, or even indictments. It also makes it harder for people to know when their other freedoms are being stepped on, which will lessen the chance of citizens taking up arms.

However, a free press is only as good as the choices the press makes on its coverage and willingness to report the truth. If the press refuses to inform the public and shills for the government willingly, it's the same result as if the government held a gun to their heads and told them what to report on. It's why we need a free press to hold itself accountable to the truth and not be beholden to one party or to the government at large.

Freedom of the press only works if the press is honest and not working in the dark secretly with a political party.
