Why Hasn't Roy Moore Filed a Defamation Suit against WaPo Yet?

If a national newspaper accused me of having improper relations with a 14 year old, and I was innocent, I would have a suit filed ASAP. For the optics alone, I would've cobbled something together to file first thing this morning - petitions can be amended, after all.

The story came out Thursday. He and his attorneys have had 4 days to craft a suit that slaps the Amazon Post right in the mouth. But he hasn't. He's only hosted a "press conference" where the only press invited was Breitbart. Regardless of what you think about Roy Moore personally, it's hard to argue that he isn't a pretty sharp legal mind.

Because it’s a hilariously ridiculous premise. Even as a shitstomping idiot of a jurist he probably understands that.

Didn't he come out with a threat today to do so?

Because he wants nothing to do with depositions and speaking under oath on this matter.

Probably because he's too busy chasing little girls.

Wouldn't he be better served to simply say that in 1979, while he was indeed 32 years old, he identified as a 17 year old, and therefore it was O.K. to feel up 14 year olds?

He has threatened a lawsuit on at least two occasions. He's not going to do it though.

Yeah. And that’s the end of it. This wouldn’t qualify as libel if he wasn’t a public figure.

He is a public figure, which makes it all the more laughable.

I believe he would need to file suit against his accuser and her mother. I'm not sure he would have any standing against the paper unless it was shown that they acted improper (i.e. the allegations that they paid people for this story are true).

I don't expect him to ever file a lawsuit but criticising him for not having it ready in four days is moronic.

Why not just identify as a 10 year old and accuse the 14 year old of seduction?

Mud slinging in political contests is almost impossible to sue. That's why America's earliest politicians sometimes resorted to shooting it out with pistols.
