Smartest and dumbest people are usually liberal. Below-above average are usually conservative. All for different reasons, some bad and some good.

People are "smart" in the field of work they work in. There are very few americans who are universally educated in all subjects.
The reason democrats do well with the highest educated is because people in that cohort disproportionally are employed in the public university systems.
