re: Why do politicians treat teachers so dismissively? Are they worried students will learn?

Dude! Central Highschool?
What year?
Class of 85 here.
The way Doc Johnson erased the chalkboard, walking back and forth in slow even lines. Too funny.

I remember almost all of mine - Of the 12 years I spent in Leesville schools, only 3 I would describe as 'not good' - but there are only 2 that I would describe as "excellent" = A large portion of my personality traits and almost all my social skill are due to those two - Jeannette Pollard & Laura Copeland.

Teaching was a once noble profession until the liberals came up with their grand indoctrination plan to destroy the minds of the youth in our country.
Schools/teachers not being on the side of the parents, actually telling parents they have no say in their education, and their obvious push for gender fluidity and toxic empathy toward things that are destroying the fabric of our country.
Teachers and teachers unions have destroyed themselves and the fact that they want to whine and bitch about their current situation, only makes me laugh at them.
I had a few decent teachers. Most sucked........and I went to private schools.

I remember many teachers fondly. Being rather precocious as a wee lad, many really took to me and helped me.

You were all such wonderfully influential women/ teachers in my life and I have such gratitude for your positive influence.

One. Maybe two. Why should I remember them?

Pretty much every teacher I had until HS was shite. There were s couple good ones but overall they sucked.

My son wants to be an Ag teacher, I've tried to talk him out of it but he has his mind made up. He's a straight A student and will graduate high-school with a lot of college credits. Atleast most of his college will be paid for by scholarships.
I guess we do need some good Christian conservatives teaching in public schools.

Why would they teach for free? Why would anyone do a job for free? Um

My point exactly. It is a JOB.

We pay teachers so poorly despite the fact that they spend more waking hours with our children than we do. Think about that. Teachers are shite on all the time, few value the job they do in 2025, and too many are content with what they make to do that job. Teachers have more contact and direct interaction with the average child than most parents.

I remember many of my teachers from every level of education however back then they taught the subjects and did not inject their beliefs and politics into it. Society was very different back then.
When you can't have an American Flag or say the pledge but can fly the "Pride" Flag and have drag shows for kids, you've crossed the line!

There are nearly 5 million K-12 teachers in public and private schools in the United States. It's not an exclusive career. There's no shortage. You can graduate with a 2.0 from an HBCU and be a teacher. And it can be argued that even that is too high of an educational requirement to teach kindergarten, where you are a glorified babysitter. I would suggest that an Associates Degree should be sufficient to teach elementary school.
You are suggesting to artificially raise the requirements and the salaries, as opposed to letting the laws of supply and demand do it.

Teachers have that much impact in and upon our lives,
Not here. I only had 3 or 4...My 1st grade teacher taught me to read (we didn't have Kindergarten in New Iberia). Then my visits to the library accounted for 90% of my learning. In HS my reputation was established. So my World History teacher was aware that I knew more world history than her, so she allowed me to do my math homework in class as long as I aced all of her tests.
College at Centenary was great. But they weren't on flat pay scales like K-12 teachers. The best profs made the most money.

Absolutely we do! The good teachers are "called", they don't "choose". My wife is an elementary school teacher and has been for 27 years now. She knew she wasn't going to make a large salary from being a teacher, and I was well aware of that when I married her. Neither one of us has ever complained about it either. The schedule allowed her to be home at the same times our son was out of school, and the insurance is much better and cheaper than what I have available at work, so there are definite benefits as well.
As far as respect goes, about every second or third trip to pretty much any store or restaurant, a little first grade missile will come running across the store to give my wife a hug, closely followed by a smiling mother who tells us how much they love and appreciate my wife. That's all the respect she needs.
For what it's worth, the good teachers don't respect the bad ones any more than most of y'all do.

I do believe the best teachers are not doing it for the money. My point is, the teacher is a very important part of an average person's life yet is paid less than almost all government workers.
