Because theoretically he influences (as in, he speaks for God) almost a billion and a half people worldwide.
Now, the strong majority of those same people don't care what he says about abortion and LGBTQ and a strong minority don't care what he says about divorce, so I'm not sure it really matters beyond a theoretical level, but that's why I think anyone cares.
